Russian man relates his memories of a pivotal year in his childhood when he lived on a collective farm after the Great Patriotic War. An incredibly multi-layered movie that runs the gamut from happy family memories based on the realization that the value of life isn't contained within possessions but rather in the enjoyment of experiences with others, to mental illness, to alcoholism, to the poignancy of post-Communism with a dash of the supernatural mixed in (all contained in a movie that barely tops an hour in length). A highly visual movie that contains just enough understated narration to keep the story moving along.
