This actually wasn't Burton's last role (his last film role was 1984). It's a better film than it's given credit for. Burton's portrayal of Wagner is solid (especially the scenes of the composer in his later years) and the film has a first rate cast of distinguished actors such as Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, and Vanessa Redgrave along with a then little known Gabriel Byrne. The entire film is over 8 hours as well as an edited version that's under 4 hours though I wouldn't recommend that version. If nothing else it's a good way to kill a Sunday.
