Movie Info

This uneven melodrama finds a New York professor and his wife on sabbatical in the Tennessee mountains. Libby (Ingrid Bergman) and her stuffy husband Roger (Fritz Weaver) endure the winter and spring. She meets Will Cade (Anthony Quinn) and falls in love with the hillbilly. He is henpecked by his harridan wife Ann (Virginia Gregg). The two engage in a passionate affair which takes Libby away from her boring, verbose and pompous spouse. The couple's daughter Ellen (Katherine Crawford) shows up announcing she has been accepted to Harvard Law School and insists Libby return to New York to care for her son while she attends. Will's miscreant son (Tom Fielding) tries to rape Libby on a remote country road and is killed by his father.
