Fascinating biopic, but best for mature teens and up.

This bio-pic's primary failing is the absence of that trademark Johnny Cash baritone, because Mr. Phoenix handles all his own singing.

Despite the adulterous start to their relationship, the movie works best as a romance and that is what it is designed to be, with the emotional climax, and best scene, being the event that cements their relationship.

The DVD version includes about ten deleted scenes, which the director James Mangold claims did not further the plot. You may ask the question of why include them?
