Movie Info

Two rival gangs of children battle out their differences in a unique manner in this is remake of the 1962 film. It is set in two neighboring villages, Carrickdowse and Bally during an unnamed era in a remote part of southwestern Ireland. Each town has it's own gang of children. The tale is told by Marie, a former Bally girl. The gang in Carrickdowse is very neat. They always wear their school uniforms with neckties. Their leader is Geronimo. The Bally kids are less genteel; they are often dirty and rambunctious. Fergus is their leader. The war begins when insults are thrown when the two gangs meet on a bridge. To retaliate the Ballys deface a church in the other town. Then they capture Geronimo and steal the buttons from his shirt. When the Carricks do the same to Fergus, the war of the buttons commences.

Very enjoyable, yet hard to find movie. I rented this many years ago, just on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. I remember it vividly. It's really wonderful. I need to see it again.

War of the Buttons is a delightful Irish film based on a French movie, which in turn is based off of a French novel. The film follows two gangs of Irish children and their battles which are fought by cutting the buttons off of each others' clothing. The film is simple with beautiful cinematography, great acting from all, and a heartwarming look back at childhood and the rivalries and friendships that shaped us then and define us now as adults. Sadly this movie is only available on VHS, and even then you'll have a hard time finding it. Apparently American distributors are reluctant to release fantastic classic family films on DVD. However a petition to retify this has been formed; http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/warofthebuttons Go out and try to find this film and you'll be happy that you did. Enjoy!
