Critic Reviews for Warum Lauft Herr R. Amok? (Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?)
Fassbinder and Fengler opt to impress upon us a sense of almost unbearable tedium, a strategy so effective that, when drama arrives in the film's closing minutes, the eruption of violence feels like a kind of relief.
With a sardonic, scalpel-like technique, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and his co-director, Michael Fengler, calmly and gleefully flay the West German version of the American dream.
A revealing demonstration of how the style of a Fassbinder film becomes its subject.
Fassbinder navigates carefully between mockery and empathy, heightening the interior drama with his superior staging.
provocative film that certainly isn't easy to forget%u2014as long as you patiently sit through its entirety

He gets along with his colleagues and is a dutiful husband; his wife's a social climber and pushes him to seek a promotion. His promotion may be a long shot, especially after he gives a dull and tipsy toast at an office dinner. But why would Herr Raab run amok? Wow, with all the excitement of March Madness, I forgot to review this movie. In fact, during March, movie watching comes second (until Kansas gets beat ). Anyway, this movie was horribly dull. This is easily the worst Fassbinder film I've seen and I hope he has none worse than this. I'm completely fine with movie about nothing, where the beauty and reality of everyday life really comes through. Herr R, though, offered nothing for me to care about. The characters weren't likable (which is fine), but they also weren't interesting and in no way commanded any of my sympathy. And after watching them for an hour, when the (spoiler:) shocking ending finally came, I did not care. In fact, I think I applauded. I do have to give Fassbinder a little credit for making something completely different from anything I've ever seen, but I would never even think about watching this again.
Good, a little bland but that's partly to add to the film's dryness. Harsh movie, very obvious but in a way still pretty rewarding.
