Jul 15, 2020John Ford directed this delightful yet curious look at Brit colonialism starring, of all people, Shirley Temple. She plays the daughter of a widowed soldier's wife who's granddad (the formidable C. Aubrey Smith) is the head honcho of an outpost in India. Vic McLaglan plays post sargeant who takes a shine to the imp (what else) and the two share great chemistry as she plays at being a soldier and he indulges her every whim. But in the final reel things get serious and some of the realities of colonialism get air time, adding weight and muscle to what was a breezy walk in Mayfair Park. I was surprised: "this is a Shirley Temple movie???" Yes it is, only directed by macho film guru John Ford. Superlative.

Apr 06, 2009This movie follows the typical "Shirley Temple movie" script and underlying themes. It was enjoyable, but not very distinct.
