Surya K @Surya_Komal_critic Sep 7, 2026 Wet Paper Bag worked best for me when it focused on what happens inside people’s minds rather than simply asking what happened to the missing sister. Its ideas about manipulation, agency, fear and breaking destructive patterns give the story considerably more substance than its initial mystery setup suggests. The closing metaphor of a wet paper bag captures that perfectly: something that appears to have structure can become fragile when exposed to enough pressure. The film’s final thoughts about choosing who we want to be, rather than remaining trapped by familiar patterns, give its psychological descent a thematic purpose. I had some reservations about the increasingly chaotic third act and Don’s characterization, but the performances, atmosphere, technical execution and underlying themes make this film a worthwhile psychological thriller to watch. See more Frank M @RT31474237 Jul 10, 2026 An auspicious feature debut for co-directors Jud Nichols and Adam Burke (who also wrote the screenplay), this is a thought-provoking, creepy psychological thriller that explores themes of cult psychology, family conflict, guilt, deception, and redemption. Nicole Weber is 'Michelle Connors,' a podcaster who learns that her estranged sister has gone missing. Her producer Reilly (played by Burke) joins her in the search, ending up posing as a married couple at a retreat house for people looking to repair their relationships. The two actors have a natural chemistry that makes their dynamic believable and sympathetic, despite some of their flawed judgement and decisions. Among the talented cast, the real stand-out is child actor Carter Monahan, 13 at the time of filming. To extol any particular aspects of his performance would mean spoilers, but if he chooses to continue to act, he's got one helluva bright future ahead of him. The actors and actresses delivered outstanding performances and made the story feel believable, emotional, and engaging. The suspense throughout the movie kept me fully invested, with just the right amount of tension to keep me wondering what would happen next. The cast did a great job bringing the characters to life, and the storyline kept a strong pace without feeling predictable. See more Paul E @MidwestFan Jun 5, 2026 "Wet Paper Bag" will fall into the pantheon of indie films that's destined to become one of those "THAT'S the movie where I first saw . . ." (in this case, Mike Bredon and Carter Monahan). A quirky plot line by two way-out-over-their-skis young producers who clearly had the guts to simply follow a modern day cult of personality concept into a script that let the characters dictate the action. But the takeaways will be the incredible depth of portrayal evinced in the faces of an older Bredon and the adolescent-beyond-his-years Monahan. Regional talent destined to break out on the national stage . . . with a haunting rabbit scene destined to give "Fatal Attraction" fans a memory sequel. If this is Burke's and Nichols FIRST foray into film, THEIR sequel (and casting talent) already has my attention "in the bag." See more Read all reviews
