Beyond the history lesson, the film adds a personal element by focusing on jockeys from two generations: British turntable legend Carl Cox and youth Dutch phenom Martin Garrix.
Bouncing between eras and their various beats, while also playing a few heartstrings down the stretch. It's a trip well worth taking, whether you're a devotee of EDM or a neophyte like myself.
What works in a nightclub set doesn't always work in a film, as electronic dance music documentary "What We Started" demonstrates.
Tells enough of the story to show today's legion of David Guetta fans where he and his peers came from.
They gush about the genre's milestones and metaphorically high-five one another while trying not to bore the uninitiated into a drugless stupor.
For a documentary that aims to be a comprehensive history of the modern dance DJ, What We Started tends to be both as enthused and unfocused about the whole scene as the average young EDM fan addled on molly.
What We Started is a sporadic, heartfelt history of EDM.
Co-directors Bert Marcus and Cyrus Saidi give a decent, comprehensive and star-witness-studded account of its evolution, from sexually liberating New York disco to the more consumer-led EDM (electronic dance music) of today.
Glaring lack of women mars otherwise great EDM docu.
The documentary What We Started aims to be "the defining film of the electronic music genre" and, for now, it is.
The documentary follows Cox's winding down and Garrix's rise, along with an entertaining, if familiar, history of electronic dance music.
What We Started brings together a group of the star DJ's from the 80's and 90's while mixing in one of the newest, hottest DJ's of today. It delivers all of the heart-pumping excitement and energy that is Electronic Dance Music.
