I waited 2 years to publish this review for a simple reason - this movie wasn't listed on RT database! Chinese director Wang Quan'an ambitiously brings Chen Zhongshi's popular historical novel White Deer Plain, to the big screen. Impressively lensed work is tracing the Bai and the Lu families from 1910 to 1938, as well as the historical and social turmoils of the time. Very well artistically, this movie disappoints on the emotional plan - very cold most of the time. Multiple characters were not an obstacle for me but some of the other Westerners complained about it. For me the biggest problem was a lack of narrative skills, especially in introducing the character of Xiao'e, a beautiful, bold and capricious young woman who joins peasant society as an unwelcome outsider in this long and complex story! Watchable and most of the time enjoyable... but it could be so much better if the story was polished!
