Movie Info

This animated Japanese film is a dark, adult-oriented thriller. A peace treaty between the Earth and the Black World, a parallel universe of spider-like aliens is coming to an end. Two cops, Taki, a human male, and Maki, a female alien, are assigned to protect a diplomat who will help secure another treaty. A radical group of aliens from the Black World are out to assassinate the diplomat and prevent the treaty; only the bond that forms between the two cops can save the Earth from destruction. Sex is strongly associated with violence in many graphic scenes; although this is intended to play a symbolic role, this theme is used excessively. The story is effective, but the film is definitely not for children or anyone easily offended. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Wicked City (Yôjû toshi)

.5/5 Your joking right? Besides a few interesting visuals, this movie fails on every level. It's hard to believe that it came from the same director as Ninja Scroll.

I understand that Yoshiaki Kawajiri is a respected Anime director and I am aware that his 1989 thriller WICKED CITY has its fans. But I stand firmly behind this rating. First of all, it is a very torturous film to sit through, with some of the most disgustingly gory scenes ever committed to Anime. In one scene, for instance, a woman is raped by a badguy, and then later some sort of parasite (straight out of ALIEN) erupts from her body and turns into something even more gross. There's also plenty of scenes involving this gross, unpleasant old midget who spends most of the film being a horny jerk, going on and on about sex. That and I felt the violence and sexuality presented in the film is done so mainly for shock value, not genuinely advancing the story along. I don't know if it is just me, but I was left with a sick stomach after sitting through this boring, hard on the eyes anime, so any supposed message that the film tries to put across was ultimately lost on me. Technically, the film is quite solid for an OVA production and it does feature one memorable line "Be a little more sexually cautious from now on." But I absolutely detest this film and I do not recommend it to anyone who is faint at heart or even for pleasurable entertainment. So... take my review with a grain of salt.

Amazing blood-soaked anime action classic. Spectacularly nasty demons and a climactic battle in, on and around church, provide plenty of action.
