Movie Info

Clamp, Japan's acclaimed all-female animation group, created this futuristic animated adventure with veteran anime director Rintaro. As the Year of Destiny dawns, the fate of the universe rests on the shoulders of Kamui Shiro, a young warrior whose destiny is to defeat one of two armies, the Dragons of Earth or the Dragons of Heaven. His choice will determine whether humanity survives or is banished from the Earth; meanwhile, two oracles, Hinoto and Kanoe, have seen opposing visions of the future, and they struggle to make their dreams a reality. X was a hit in Japan in 1996; it received a limited theatrical release in the United States in 2000 shortly before its release on home video.

Part of the reason it moves so slowly is that it takes time to introduce the 20 or so main characters in the film, and it takes some time to show each of these characters being hacked to death with swords.

Earth versus Heaven is always an interesting conflict, but it's seldom looked so beautiful.

An all-female studio made X. However, don't expect any feminist insights: the villainess still has huge jugs . . .

Audience Reviews for X (X: Their Destiny Was Foreordained 1999)

The story elements involved in the much longer manga are largely ignored, but as a purely visual work, it is stunning and dreamlike. The battle sequences are more than satisfying and I would still recommend that anime fans and fans of the manga see this one.

Beautiful and symbolic anime.

CLAMP's broad appeal with anime fans is beyond me, still to this date. At least everyone gets killed quite fast here. What a waste of X-Japan's Forever Love and "X".
