This is an entry in the mutant saga that grows better with successive viewings and even manages to sneak some under the radar performances that stand out. If you remember disliking this movie, I highly suggest you give it another go.

There are some issues, even forgiving a loose plot that doesn't do much character work. I mean, I've read the comics, and I still don't understand what Apocalypse's powers are. He can...dissolve stuff? Make people get swallowed into walls? Who knows?

...if you aren't an X-Men fan, watch it for the excellent VFX and for some good laughs. Either way, missing this is a big mistake.

Despite appearing emotionally and thematically hollow compared to the overwrought subtexts of previous entries, Apocalypse has managed to incorporate weighty themes of outsiderdom in an uncharacteristically subtle manner.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" lacks a thorough emotional investment in the apocalyptic events happening in the film and the villain is underwhelming, but the new mutants and some of the action prove to be enough to redeem some of the downsides.

Bryan Singer has managed to pump out what is probably the best X-Men film after First Class. He really does demonstrate what a difference a director can make to a mega-film such as this.
