Movie Info

DEMON POND is the modern-day story of a man searching for a friend who has mysteriously disappeared, with a magical tale involving strange creatures, a heartbroken princess, and a pact that can't be broken. Conflicts between faith and skepticism, and between social obligation and personal desire drive the narrative toward a dramatic conclusion where the worlds of the real and the surreal inevitably collide.

(***): A strange but intriguing stage play from Takashi Miike.

Miike takes on the theater, and it's actually pretty good, if not great, as both fantastical staging of an amusing and tragic tale and as a videotaped live affair. I'll also never forget Mr. Veggie!

yay! first person to comment on this film or should i say play. yes miike directs a full on staged play which was recorded onto film. The play is over 2 hours and takes place on a single set the entire time. The use of lighting and changes in characters gives the play it's variety and after the first half an hour you are totally immersed the actors and costumes are amazing and the story is rather simple yet quite beautiful. It is all about the love and all the characters are not the same by the time its all over. The play uses japanese folklore of animal spirits to tell the story and has a climax that couldn't have been better. Miike really can direct anything and his recent play proves it.
