Movie Info

Sammy Smalls (Cristin Milioti), a twenty-something tomboy, wants to find love that will stick, and a job that doesn't make her queasy with guilt (she hunts down shoplifters at the local grocery stoe and delivers them to her abusive boss). Most of all, she wants to be better in bed -- but how does a quirky girl with limited experience pursue a more worldly existence? The indie romantic comedy-drama Year of the Carnivore tracks her charmingly laviscuous journey towards self-discovery and sexual self-confidence.

Any picture with a legitimate claim as a good sex comedy is obliged to be (a) sexy and (b) comic. If neither, then what's left?

A decidedly quirky yet endearing comedy that wears its Juno crush like a hickey -- and I mean that in a good way.

All in all, there's a sweetness to The Year of the Carnivore that survives its flaws. It is not successful as a comedy in the sense of there being a lot of laughs. But it is an interesting and different character portrait.

Audience Reviews for Year of the Carnivore

A nerdy grocery store detective begins "sexual training" to earn the affections of a musician. Cristin Milioti, aka the girl with the yellow umbrella, shines in the lead role, but the film is troubled by the fact that very few of the characters are at all likable. Normally, unlikeable characters aren't a problem for me, but when the object of the protagonist's affections is an utter dick, we judge the protagonist; we all put on our "gay best friend" hats and say, "Girl, you're so much better than this." Some of the situations Sammy finds herself in are chuckle-worthy (the mother teaching Sammy how to use a vibrator and the resulting threesome), but that's about the extent of the film's humor. Overall, Ted's future wife is quirky and adorable, but her film choice needs improvement.

Nice little film, but rather one-dimensional. Would've worked better if we saw some real chemistry between the protagonists. A bit more local color, minor characters and conflict would've filled out the film better.
