if you like raunchy comedy in the vein of monty python and cheech and chong you will love this.
How could such an incredible cast, combining Monty Python's and Young Frankenstein's stars and adding Cheech and Chong, be so relatively uninteresting. There are great bits here and there, but it's also a bit of a sad slog.
My favorite skit "Mr. Prostitute" keeps me laughing for years on end! Star-studded cast and a great parody of Pirate flicks!
This movie has all the great comic actors of the 1970's and 1980's but it's not that funny. The writers tried to rely on physical comedy but the verbal comedy was flat. The title character is taken from the real pirate Black Beard. The more recent movie Pirates of the Caribbean has a similar theme but is a much better movie. This was the last movie Marty Feldman made before he died.
I absolutely love this movie! its so funny!...
Seriously, the synopsis on Flixster is right, it just lacks a good level of hilarity throughout. There are funny parts, and it does rather well, but it just never really "occurs".
The best way to describe this is 'Python goes family'. Like everyone else said the cast is stellar but the script needs work and lots of talent is criminally wasted. As you'd expect Chapman is the best thing in it, but given that the film carries his name, doesn't get a lot of screen time at all. Anyway, it's pretty funny and at least it isn't overblown/confused/boring like "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". Sunday afternoon stuff.
Cult Classic! Stagger Stagger Crawl Crawl....Seriously, where else can you find Monty Python, Cheech and Chong, and many more!
