While the story isn't anything new, this 13th film in the Zatoichi saga is brilliantly filmed and has some truly awe-inspiring battle scenes, in the latter half of the film especially. The sequences of Ichi on the bridge facing multiple foes as others pound drums to distract him and the showdown of Ichi and the other famous swordsman on the shoreline is wonderfully filmed and a true pleasure to watch.
Returns to a more familiar story for our blind hero. This is both comfortably recognizable and disappointingly unoriginal. Zatoichi is given some thinking to do by a blind companion, but this isn't explored in as great detail as I would have liked. It's nice to see Zatoichi contemplating the end of his murderous ways, but it never manages to convince that this will be the end. As such the story often seems futile. Katsu is again brilliant and like any Zatoichi film, it's simply fun to watch a quality story that fills you with nostalgia.
By the numbers, but still okay.
