Zombieland: Double Tap

Critics Consensus

Zombieland: Double Tap makes up for a lack of fresh brains with an enjoyable reunion that recaptures the spirit of the original and adds a few fun twists.

Movie Info

A decade after Zombieland became a hit film and a cult classic, the lead cast (Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone) have reunited with director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and the original writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (Deadpool) for Zombieland: Double Tap. In the sequel, written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and Dave Callaham, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, these four slayers must face off against the many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

  • The door is left open for a third film to crawl out of its grave in another ten years - let's just hope they know when to put it out of its misery.

  • In ten years, they couldn't come up with enough new ideas that they had to copy so many from the first one?

  • It's still a road-trip film, in the same world that you fell for the first time around, with the characters you grew to love, accompanied by a decade worth of growth.

  • The big question you can't help but asking after watching Zombieland 2 is was this film really necessary? About 10 years ago, this film would have been a no-brainer, but now it feels a bit more like a nostalgia exercise.

Audience Reviews for Zombieland: Double Tap

Sequels are a dime a dozen in this modern age of big budget Hollywood. Was Zombieland crying out for a sequel? No. Fans have been begging for a sequel for years, and in my experience with sequels, long overdue sequels hardly deliver. The films characters are still great and the ballooning support cast was quite small overall, and allowed the central cast to maintain all the focus. I had expected something more self aware, much like the previous film, but the film felt safe with replicating some of the jokes. Double Tap falls into all the common sequel pitfalls and I couldn't believe this was the film they delivered after an extended delay. It's a good film, not a great film. If a third film is made, I only hope they drift away from the safe storytelling model. 19/01/2020

It's good to see everyone back after 10 years. There's nothing groundbreaking about this film, unlike the first one, but if you enjoyed Zombieland 1 then there is no reason the sequel would upset you. It's a fun ride that you probably won't remember soon after it ends.

Did you like Zombieland? You'll like Zombieland: Double Tap. It's pretty much that simple. It doesn't break the mold, doesn't try to reinvent itself with new takes on the zombie mythos, it's just more Zombieland. Honestly, that's kinda' refreshing. It strangely doesn't feel regressive and outdated, it feels charmingly retro, like we're revisiting these characters we loved and just seeing what they're up to 10 years later, and this feels like the natural progression of their story. Sure, I want movies that take bold risks in new directions, but other times I just want to see a bunch of likable characters kill zombies in slow motion and that's what we get here. We see new types of zombies which is pretty cool, we see some new locations, but at the end of the day it's just a fun movie. It doesn't try to be anything more than what it is, it's just fun! I had fun watching it! I like these characters, I like this world, I like the kinetic energy of this direction. 10 years from now, I'll take another.

The plucky wisecracking survivors of the first Zombieland return to snark their way through more of the same, really without much regard or attention given to undead at all, except to kill one or two every now and again. What's important here are the interpersonal relationships of our team who unanimously conclude that they AREN'T a team...until they are. A little bit of fun then, watching this quartet zing one another throughout. Re-watchable? I think so. Zoey Deutch? Primed to headline #3, perhaps?
