Weekly Ketchup

Monday, Jul. 26 2010, 04:36 PM

This Week, the Weekly Ketchup was split into two columns in order to best cover all of the news from San Diego Comic-Con. The first column covered the news that came out before SDCC started, and now here is the column covering the news that came out this weekend. As would be expected, most of the news is about comic book movies, including news for Marvel's next three movies (Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger), a Superman rumor, the Judge Dredd reboot, movies based on Garth Ennis' The Boys and Will Eisner's A Contract with God and the revelation of what project Guillermo del Toro signed on for after dropping out of directing the two The Hobbit movies.

This is the week of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), so you're getting two helpings of the Weekly Ketchup. This first segment was written on Thursday morning (just as the Comic Con is starting its first full day), and the second helping will be posted after the weekend is over, to cover all of the additional news that comes out. Included in this batch is a new movie for director Sam Raimi, new roles for Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg, news about the 300 sequel and an adaptation of one of the 1990s' most award-winning comic books. Note: not all news covered in either segment of this Week's Ketchup is necessarily related to San Diego Comic-Con.

This week's Ketchup covers the last full week before San Diego Comic-Con next weekend, which is traditionally a period in which news is light, as studios are holding back big announcements, except for the cases where some of that news gets leaked out a few days earlier than the studio bosses would like. This week's news includes new roles for Betty White, Amanda Seyfried, Elizabeth Banks, Mark Ruffalo and Will Smith, adaptations of the lives of Cain (from the Bible) and Senator John Edwards, and new movies with connections to THREE different Disney animated movies (Peter Pan, Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

This shortened week (following the 4th of July weekend) would normally be a bit light on movie news anyway, but movers and shakers are also holding back their big announcements until San Diego Comic-Con later this month, so this week was even lighter on news. However, a few tidbits still managed to stand out, including plans for movies based upon The Little Mermaid and TV's The Fall Guy, and new movies for Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Bacon and Billy Crystal.
