Haphazardly written, the frivolous film doesn't make satisfactory use of its excellent stars, and you'll forget the whole thing the minute it's over.

Boyhood (2014)
Captures the bittersweet, sublimely humdrum process of growing up in a way that no other single movie has done.

Lucy (2014)
In America, we call this kind of filmmaking -- designed for airplanes, with a slumming star -- 'cheese,' and just because they'd call it 'brie' in France doesn't make it any less smooth or sinfully satisfying.

Sex Tape (2014)
Perhaps the best thing about Sex Tape is that it never gets icky or squicky or squeamish; it talks about sex as if it were something two consenting adults might enjoy as part of their relationship, not just a source of humiliation and 'comedy.'

Smart, strong and as morally intriguing as it is physically propulsive, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes somehow turns what might have been a lazy reboot of yesterday's camp 'classics' into vital, exciting and resonant moviemaking.

Snowpiercer (2014)
Bong's top priority is to deliver a meaty, satisfying action adventure, and he succeeds there like the world-class filmmaker he is.

Transformers: Age of Extinction isn't a bad movie; it's the worst possible product of a big Hollywood system drunk on a cocktail of fermented nostalgia and rancid profiteering while driving moviegoing into the ground.

Jersey Boys (2014)
Jersey Boys looks and feels like a Scorsese movie with a particularly brutal cold -- stuffed-up, slow, tired, muddy-looking, like it was shot through a new Instragram filter called "Diabetic Sunset."

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be tough for your kids to watch, and some of it will require explaining and discussion -- which alone makes it mean and matter more than the majority of designed-to-be-forgotten animated films in theaters these days.

It's this summer's comedy sequel without equal -- but Tatum steals every scene here, like a walking Golden Retriever who's just happy to be so happy.

The Grand Seduction is a thoroughly modern film that resembles nothing less than classic Hollywood comedies like Local Hero and Waking Ned Devine in both its comedy and its real, rich characters.

Shooting for satire and hilarity but landing limply in a no-laughs-land between sit-com and cartoon, A Million Ways to Die in the West offers you at least two times that many ways to disappoint in the theater.

Someday, I hope, American moviegoers will stop fearing subtitles -- or, at least, fear subtitles less than they hate lame, American-ized re-makes that try to super-size the action but mostly just result in dim, diminished re-treads.

The Other Woman is actually at its worst when it tries to be a big, broad, stereotypical big-studio comedy ... and if the film has an MVP, it's Mann.

Transcendence's main problem is that it feels like a film made by a computer -- it knows where all the beats and breaks of an action film have to go, but doesn't know why, exactly ...

Draft Day (2014)
Draft Day is the cinema equivalent of a steak dinner at a red-banquette place -- a little hokey, a little retro, without a single surprise but not without a few high points.

By 20 minutes in, I'd renamed this film 300: Fall of the Dust Particles as director Noam Murro seemed to be fascinated by the effect of having dust float in the air.

The Monuments Men puts off a smug vibe, if you get what I mean, and holds the audience at a distance, not allowing us into this cool club.
