I think this is sort of quite an impressive film and it just sort of makes you angry all over again about this sort of unfairness of the politics in the world.

This tribute to news journalists manages to pack in a few cliches, but director Renny Harlin has always been good with action, and the action scenes here are scarily effective.

It's actually not the first French comedy I've seen recently that just seemed not so much funny as just a bit off somehow and I really didn't enjoy this very much.

I'm sure a lot of people will go along with the stupid premise of the film and enjoy it hugely. I wish I'd been able to.

The music is indeed lovely and it's about, for me, the only lovely thing about this film.

It's a sad little story of talent suppressed, but it's beautifully done, with some interiors actually filmed in Versailles, and the music, of course, is sublime.

Some people have called the film pretentious, as if having a grand aim in making a film is somehow embarrassing. I was incredibly moved.

Cars 2 (2011)
A sequel that improves on the original, Cars 2 is sheer delight.

I quite liked the first film in this series but this one lacks heart, it is just two hours of major destruction.

There's no doubting the film's serious intent, but while it's often very impressive it's also very cold and detached.

It doesn't soar like the best of animation these days but it's an entertainment, particularly for the younger set.

Bridesmaids (2011)
The real problem is that Annie veers dangerously close to being unlikeable although Kristen Wiig's performance is so winning that she just about gets away with it.

There are beautiful performances here from every member of the cast, and it's much to Loach's credit that he handles this potentially sensational material with such restraint.

Super 8 (2011)
Harks back to the kind of film Spielberg was producing in the late '70s and early '80s... For much of its length, Super 8 is comparable with the best of these films.

Here I Am (2010)
Unfortunately, Cole's decision to cast non-professional actors in many roles doesn't pay off; in too many scenes, both Langton and Pittman are awkward and visibly uncomfortable playing their roles, and this reduces the film's impact.

It's all fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't go very far.

This has been robustly and intelligently directed by Vaughn.

It's a small film but it has quite a lot going for it because also there's a sort of subtext about over-fishing and the regulations that have been brought to bear on these fishermen.

Isn't a great film by any means but, if you're in the right mood, it provides some laughs and it looks very handsome indeed.

Insidious (2011)
They're having such a joke on us because there is a ridiculous element to it and one of the things that I think they fall into the trap of showing too much. Horror and being scared is much more effective without actually seeing.

Insidious (2011)
If the film was attempting to be more than just a horror movie, it doesn't work on that level either.

La Rafle (2012)
For Bosch this was obviously a story she had to tell; it's a pity she has told it with what at times is a heavy hand.

Greenfield stumbles on occasions but it aims at some sort of honesty and for the most part achieves it.

Mad Bastards (2011)
The writer/director was Brendan Fletcher, it's his first feature and if there is a flaw with the film it is that the narrative is at times a bit confused. Despite that there's something very affecting about these Mad Bastards.

It's a lovely film, a compassionate one that has a sense of humour about the world of Eastern Europe and yet a respect also. Four stars from me.

Source Code (2011)
Source Code is the second feature directed by David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, after the excellent Moon a couple of years ago, and it confirms him as an astute and talented director of mysterious science fiction.

After a while it all becomes a bit predictable, especially as the political motivations are, to the uninitiated, more than slightly opaque.

Joffe has retained the ending Greene and Rattigan devised for the original film; the book's ending is different, but I always preferred the film's ending, and this one works again for me.

This magnificent film is the third feature from young Russian director Alexei Popogrebsky, who is clearly a major talent, able to tell a story almost entirely through visual means.

Hop (2011)
The film is bright and breezy and the animation is first rate. Some of the jokes are lame, and it's more a film for younger, and less sophisticated children.

There is a rather too neat resolution, but it's not one that anyone could really object to. This is a sweet, gentle, unashamedly sentimental film.

Some fussy directorial touches don't seriously get in the way of a tricky plot with a suspenseful denouement and there's an excellent use of locations in the Los Angeles area.

As a triangular love story, this doesn't really soar either, despite good performances from a hip young cast, and the end result is that a story that should have been terribly affecting, isn't.

It's a beautiful, sad, ultimately compassionate film about the origins of violence, wherever it rears its head, and the implications of dealing with it.

[The] character has given Giamatti another great role after Sideways and Harvey Pekar and he runs with it; no wonder he won a Golden Globe for this.

Biutiful (2010)
The film, whatever its intentions, winds up just being deeply depressing and, at nearly 2 1/2 hours, it's a very long slog indeed to the finish.

The trouble with the film is that there seems to have been no attempt to ground it in any sort of reality; even the celebratory bacchanal is just plain weird.

Limitless (2011)
It's a fanciful story and quite a good one. I enjoyed it and I thought Bradley Cooper was much better than he'd been in things I'd seen him in before.
