The body count is enormous, the explosions deafening, and none of it makes sense -- so why did I find this such a guilty pleasure?

I think this is a calling card film and he's shown what he can do with a camera and with performances.

The plotting, and the involvement of the troubled Wesley, also seems a bit contrived. But it all pays off in a powerfully satisfying climax.

Lovers of political drama will be transfixed as these two immensely ambitious and powerful men make decisions that will change the world.

Centurion (2010)
Marshall takes the ultra-violent and grim goings on with deadening seriousness, but the temptation to see it all as a rather bad joke is only emphasised by the anachronistic dialogue.

It's like it goes forever, this monotony of life on the island.

Stunningly photographed by Anna Howard, South Solitary is a very special film, both original and in its own way, quite a daring one.

Greenberg (2010)
There's a lot not to like about Greenberg, the character and the film; and yet, by the end, I found it very touching, and the final scene is so imbued with delicacy and humanity that any stumbles along the way can be forgiven.

Creation (2010)
The film indulges in one little bit of overkill towards the end, so unnecessary, but overall Creation is a very fine film indeed.

There's more atmosphere than plot in Claire McCarthy's film, but the atmosphere is very strong indeed.

The original film was long at 126 minutes; this is egregiously long at 141 mins -- a ridiculous length for this kind of film.

This is a very contrived rom-com which isn't saved by the generally likable performances.

This is a beautiful film, moving, stylish with a sensual romance at its heart.

Toy Story 3 (2010)
The 3D animation is quite beautiful, and there's the usual bonus of a Pixar short film before the feature, the clever and enchanting Night and Day.

Though it drags a bit at times, and -- like other Apatow films -- concentrates on the gross-out elements, the film has a lovely central core in which the importance of love and long-term relationships are stressed.

It's intelligent, it doesn't go for the emotional jugular, it has an honesty about it that's refreshing.

The Shrek franchise is a hugely enjoyable one, with funny characters and a knowing way with mocking fairy-tales and popular culture.

This is not a film in which major events occur; it's a drama made up of everyday banalities, small moments that are of immense importance to the man and the woman who experience them.

The A-Team (2010)
This film is chaos on wheels. Nothing really makes sense, the action is filmed in a way that is totally confusing. It's impressionistic cinema. Co-writer/director Joe Carnahan seems to think that what we can't figure out won't hurt us.

Occasionally it's good to go to the movies and just have a good time as I did with this. The trailer didn't lie, it is fun schlock.

Deservedly won the World Cinema Jury prize at Sundance earlier this year, and confirms that Michod is an important new talent.

It may be easy to dismiss it as a merely superficial experience: it's all about the clothes, the shoes, the designer life, and of course that's part of it. But it's also about the lives of these women that we've shared for twelve years now.

I think the screenplay starts off well. I think the opening scenes in Melbourne are really quite funny and they promise something more than you actually get. But once the film gets to Mykonos, it goes for the most obvious targets.

It's colourful and light but the only really solid performance is by Alex Dimitriades who is actually stoic in this mayhem.

There are an irritating number of fish and ocean montages with plaintive music which makes the film longer than it need be, but there's no denying the impact of its content.

It's a rite of passage film, a slightly muted one, but still it's an Australian film that doesn't end in doom and gloom.

Iron Man 2 (2010)
This may not be quite as good as the original, it doesn't actually need to be over two hours long, you could avoid the sag in the middle with judicious editing of the screenplay by Justin Theroux. But there's still a lot of joy to be had here.

Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel are attractive enough but they can't elevate this seriously silly rom-com.
