Source Code (2011)
A tremendously enjoyable trip to the movies, one that gets your blood pumping fast enough to keep your brain ticking.

Fast Five (2011)
Don't leave your brain at the door like other critics are suggesting, just hide it behind a beer helmet and gleefully guzzle Teh Stoopid away.

Rio (2011)
Much like the titular Brazilian city, Rio is a festive film, heavily favouring frivolity over anything more deep and meaningful.

'Happy' is a lovely, jovial word that becomes something quite vile and abhorrent when followed by the word 'Madison'.

Red Riding Hood clearly aims to scare, yet Hardwicke's direction is about as tense as a broken rubber band.

The Mechanic (2011)
Statham has my respect for two reasons: 1) he's one of the few remaining action stars who isn't claiming his pension, and 2) he has yet to star in a Disney movie in which he must babysit projectile-vomiting children.

I'm sure there's an epic battle going on here, but it's hard to tell when the cameraman is too busy shaking off a swarm of angry bees to capture any of it.

The film degenerates into a repetitive game of cat and mouse in which Roger Sterling chases Jason Bourne through a bunch of magical doors.

127 Hours (2010)
It doesn't matter how disarming Franco's single-handed performance is; there is simply not enough dramatic meat on the bones of Ralston's true story to distract us from where it is heading.

If I had to dig for praise, it's impressive that Reitman manages to get the 5'2" Portman and 6'3" Kutcher in the same frame.

Faster (2010)
There's a primal intensity, both adrenal and emotional, flowing through Tillman Jr's frenetic direction and Johnson's gritty performance that suggests there's more going on under the hood than the stock fittings let on.

There's just enough novelty, action and comedy in the tank to see this film teeter across the finish line, even if it does cough and splutter for much of the journey.

Somewhere (2010)
Somewhere features dead-on-the-inside people looking pensively into their bowls of pasta. Some call this reality, I call it bloody boring.
