Rating Title/Year Author
4/5 Bad Boys for Life (2020) Gary Wolcott Lost count of the body count mid-movie. Car chases, motorcycle chases, foot chases, gun play, some humor. And there will be a sequel so we likely will have bad boys for life. EDIT
Posted Jan 17, 2020
5/5 Uncut Gems (2019) Gary Wolcott When Adam Sandler decides to bag the fart jokes and really act, few actors are better. This is an intense, almost exhausting drama and one of my favorite movies this year. EDIT
Posted Dec 24, 2019
4.5/5 Little Women (2019) Gary Wolcott The original chick flick makes another big screen appearance. Saoirse Ronan anchors a strong cast. The real star, however, is writer/director Greta Gerwig. EDIT
Posted Dec 24, 2019
2/5 Spies in Disguise (2019) Gary Wolcott No disguising this one. A spy turning into a pigeon is terrible. Younger kids will find this appealing but the rest of us score it as pigeon poop. EDIT
Posted Dec 24, 2019
5/5 Bombshell (2019) Gary Wolcott Loved it. A great cast plus it manages to be fairly non-judgmental and non-political and just focuses on what got Fox's Roger Ailes ousted. EDIT
Posted Dec 20, 2019
2.5/5 Cats (2019) Gary Wolcott So bad it's destined for a box of kitty litter. EDIT
Posted Dec 20, 2019
2.5/5 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) Gary Wolcott Episode IX is packed with Star Wars mumbo jumbo & lots of fan-satisfying CGI. Speaking on behalf of non-fans, I thank The Force. It's done. Over. Finished. Through. Finally. EDIT
Posted Dec 20, 2019
4/5 Richard Jewell (2019) Gary Wolcott Few directors are better storytellers than Clint Eastwood. Lady reporter controversy aside, superb acting anchors this riveting story. EDIT
Posted Dec 13, 2019
3.5 Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) Gary Wolcott Dwayne Johnson & crew have a blast with their parts & the fun they have is contagious. I didn't see the first level but the next level works for me. EDIT
Posted Dec 13, 2019
3.5/5 A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) Gary Wolcott More Mr. Rogers and less of the made-up story. The article the movie is based on is more interesting than this film. Tom Hanks nails the part but I wanted and expected more. EDIT
Posted Nov 23, 2019
1/5 21 Bridges (2019) Gary Wolcott A predictable bad-guy-cops chase movie. 21 bridges are closed. It doesn't seem to be all that inconvenient for anyone. Youda thought the producers would at least explore that! EDIT
Posted Nov 23, 2019
3/5 Frozen II (2019) Gary Wolcott Too much tuneless music & too little fun. My 6 & 4-year old granddaughters loved it. Other kids in the audience spent much of the movie squirming & wanting to leave. So did I. EDIT
Posted Nov 23, 2019
3.5/5 Last Christmas (2019) Gary Wolcott I hate Christmas movies but in spite of the title, it really isn't one. Emilia Clark's performance saves this movie. She's amazing in a movie that really isn't. EDIT
Posted Nov 8, 2019
3.5/5 Midway (2019) Gary Wolcott A WWII war movie & a history lesson. It's a fairly accurate one packed with decent performances & great effects. Midway sits midway between good & great. EDIT
Posted Nov 8, 2019
5/5 Jojo Rabbit (2019) Gary Wolcott A perfect balance between powerful drama & laugh-out-loud comedy entwined in a coming of age movie about Nazis, WWII, a Jewish stowaway & the fragility of the human condition. EDIT
Posted Nov 1, 2019
5/5 Harriet (2019) Gary Wolcott A Cliff's Notes movie. It tries to pack this extraordinary life into just 2 hours. Tubman deserves 4 or more. My highest rating only because of Cynthia Erivo's performance. EDIT
Posted Nov 1, 2019
4/5 Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) Gary Wolcott We thought the last termination of the Terminators terminated the franchise but more Terminators turned up needing to be terminated & this will no doubt generate more sequels. EDIT
Posted Nov 1, 2019
3.5/5 Zombieland: Double Tap (2019) Gary Wolcott The original is one of my favorite horror flicks. This one? Disappointing in so many ways but still very, very funny in spots. Funny enough to recommend but one tap too many. EDIT
Posted Oct 19, 2019
2/5 Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) Gary Wolcott The perfect example of why sequels ought not be made but the evil-eye dual of Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer is a ton of fun. Nothing else is. EDIT
Posted Oct 19, 2019
2.5/5 Gemini Man (2019) Gary Wolcott A movie about the clone of an assassin goes after the assassin is, itself, a a bad clone of other, better action thrillers. EDIT
Posted Oct 11, 2019
2/ 5 The Addams Family (2019) Gary Wolcott Budda dump. Snap. Snap. Charles Addams is a cartoonist who was ahead of his time. This movie is not. A few laughs but not much else. Kids will like it. Adults will be bored. EDIT
Posted Oct 11, 2019
2/5 Lucy in the Sky (2019) Gary Wolcott Lucy in the Sky has no diamonds. EDIT
Posted Oct 11, 2019
3/5 Judy (2019) Gary Wolcott Renee Zellweger gives a great performance that makes Judy definitely worth seeing. Personally, I'd rather remember Judy Garland as Dorothy and not a pathetic diva. EDIT
Posted Sep 27, 2019
5/5 Abominable (2019) Gary Wolcott A sweet film with enough depth to hook adults and enough slapstick to tickle kids. A magical movie. Loved it. And do sit through the wonderful photos in the credits! EDIT
Posted Sep 27, 2019
2.5/5 Hustlers (2019) Gary Wolcott The movie is so-so, however, JLo -- who has always been stuck in dumb romcoms or boring dramas -- gives the performance we have always believed she is capable of giving. EDIT
Posted Sep 13, 2019
4/5 The Goldfinch (2019) Gary Wolcott I'm in the critic and audience minority on this one. Patience is needed to get through it but this is a complex story with very good acting and is one of the year's best films. EDIT
Posted Sep 13, 2019
5/5 Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) Gary Wolcott I fell in love with Brittany, her story, the other characters & this movie. But mostly I fell in love with Jillian Bell. She gave my favorite acting performance of the year. EDIT
Posted Sep 6, 2019
3.5/5 It: Chapter Two (2019) Gary Wolcott Barely recommending this. Take the first film & this one & shrink the whole thing to 3-hours & you have one of the best horror movies ever instead of just a good one. EDIT
Posted Sep 6, 2019
5/5 The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) Gary Wolcott Exactly as predictable as you expect & you love it exactly as much as you expect. And that's a lot. Fun flick & the kind that gets awards. Or at least is nominated for them. EDIT
Posted Aug 22, 2019
5/5 Ready or Not (2019) Gary Wolcott Fun with a capital F. If a horror/thriller/drama & part comedy is your thing then you'll love this one. Ready or Not is about hide and seek, is hilarious and it has game. EDIT
Posted Aug 22, 2019
2/5 Angel Has Fallen (2019) Gary Wolcott Falls as hard & badly as Olympus & London. Though no one has understood a word he's said in a decade, Nick Nolte is the only actor having any fun. He's just not in it enough. EDIT
Posted Aug 22, 2019
4/5 Good Boys (2019) Gary Wolcott Lots and lots of laughs. Or put another way. An immature movie for the most mature among us. EDIT
Posted Aug 16, 2019
5/5 Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2019) Gary Wolcott I don't note the film's flaws in my review. There are some. Maybe I'm just fond of imploding narcissists as movie characters and of Cate Blanchett's always brilliant acting. EDIT
Posted Aug 16, 2019
4/5 Brian Banks (2018) Gary Wolcott Inspiring story. Race is part of the reason he was jailed. However, the producers assume you have intelligence enough to see it without them having to beat you over the head. EDIT
Posted Aug 9, 2019
4/5 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) Gary Wolcott Not rocket science. Other than suspension of disbelief and two characters from the series, it has little in common with F&F. This is -- however -- fast and furious and fun! EDIT
Posted Aug 2, 2019
5/5 Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) Gary Wolcott Tarantino's serious is always funny. Or is his funny always serious? Either/or. Here he celebrates the Hollywood of antiquity in a dramatically funny way. What's not to love? EDIT
Posted Jul 25, 2019
5/5 Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) Gary Wolcott The most fun I've had in a theater all year. EDIT
Posted Jul 3, 2019
2.5/5 Toy Story 4 (2019) Gary Wolcott People that fell in love with the franchise as kids are now in their 30s and 40s. The series has grown up with them. That's what's mostly wrong here. Toys ought not grow up. EDIT
Posted Jun 21, 2019
4/5 Shaft (2019) Gary Wolcott The third film to have the title Shaft. Other than the 1971 original this is the first one worth seeing. Samuel L. Jackson and the cast have a blast. So will you. EDIT
Posted Jun 14, 2019
2/5 The Dead Don't Die (2019) Gary Wolcott The dead may not die but this movie does. Considering the quality of the cast, this is the most disappointing movie so far this year. Had potential to be fun. Didn't happen. EDIT
Posted Jun 14, 2019
2/5 Men in Black: International (2019) Gary Wolcott The concept is just worn out. Sequels two and three proved that. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones skipped this one. Not even a cameo. What's that tell ya? EDIT
Posted Jun 14, 2019
1/5 Dark Phoenix (2019) Gary Wolcott There are reasons the X-Men were not included in the Avengers conclusion films. A boring concept is one. Logan is the original group's swan song. Maybe this is First Class's. EDIT
Posted Jun 7, 2019
4/5 The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) Gary Wolcott This isn't rocket science, it's formula animation. The key to whether it is fun or not is in the writing. This one is packed with laugh-out-loud sequences for kids & adults. EDIT
Posted Jun 7, 2019
1/5 The Souvenir (2019) Gary Wolcott A great example of me seeing movies so you don't have to. EDIT
Posted May 31, 2019
2/5 Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) Gary Wolcott CGI has made Godzilla and his monster friends and the carnage they create more realistic. What it hasn't done is improve the really dumb stories that surround him. EDIT
Posted May 31, 2019
5/5 Rocketman (2019) Gary Wolcott Not a fan of the genre and not a fan of Elton John but this movie takes old, stale songs and an old, stale rocker and makes both him and his music fresh again. I loved it. EDIT
Posted May 31, 2019
2.5/5 Aladdin (2019) Gary Wolcott The question most asked is how does Will Smith do as the genie? The simple answer? He's not Robin Williams. Plus, the original ran 90-minutes. This one is a bloated 2:08. EDIT
Posted May 24, 2019
1/5 The Sun Is Also a Star (2019) Gary Wolcott The sun may be a star but that same sun also sets very quickly on this one. EDIT
Posted May 17, 2019
2/5 Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) Gary Wolcott Only Pokemon fans will find this remotely interesting. Worse. You won't leave the theater regurgitating a bunch of great Ryan Reynolds lines. EDIT
Posted May 12, 2019
2/5 The Hustle (2019) Gary Wolcott A pathetic remake of equally pathetic Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Rebel Wilson needs to stop attempts to make blathering comedy. Blathering is not funny. Neither is this movie. EDIT
