Her (2013) Alicia Cohn Once the viewer buys into the relationship, the plot, until then unbelievably believable, starts to drift. EDIT

Divergent (2014) Alicia Cohn The good news is, the sharply drawn characters and interesting concepts in Divergent offer enough to entertain those unfamiliar with the books. The bad news is, plot-wise it probably won't leave them satisfied. EDIT

The Maze Runner (2014) Alicia Cohn Here's the bad news upfront: The Maze Runner doesn't answer any questions. The good news, or worse news, depending on your perspective, is that it's interesting enough you'll wish it did. EDIT

Gone Girl (2014) Alicia Cohn Gone Girl is a cautionary romance akin to Fatal Attraction... but it goes a step further. Fatal Attraction terrified unfaithful men with the threat of insane consequences, while Gone Girl terrifies with the insane consequences of marriage itself. EDIT

Laggies (2014) Alicia Cohn watch Laggies for the comedy and if you're a Sam Rockwell fan. But even though this is a small-budget film in limited release without a glossy marketing campaign, don't expect a gritty take or deep dive into the mind of a terrified 20-something... EDIT

The Divergent Series: Insurgent (2015) Alicia Cohn Hinges on the question of whether the main character can forgive herself. This is not a small debate - but unfortunately, the movie ultimately treats it like one. EDIT

The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) Alicia Cohn It has a feminist lineage and it wants to be about female empowerment. But it cheats. While Minnie tries and fails to empower herself multiple times throughout the movie, she ends up having to rely for power on men... EDIT

Trainwreck (2015) Alicia Cohn Schumer's career is definitely having a moment, and Trainwreck is perfectly tuned in to its time, showcasing both Schumer and her particular brand of dirty comedy. But aside from these elements, Trainwreck is not particularly revolutionary. EDIT

Paper Towns (2015) Alicia Cohn Neither horrible nor brilliant; it is just rather pointless. The characters are defined by their quirks, rather than characterized through quirky detail. EDIT

Room (2015) Alicia Cohn Although it's not for everybody - the hell depicted in this story will be hard for many to watch - it is hard not to root for a movie with such an optimistic and moral narrative arc, especially one done this well. EDIT
