Corben has done an impressive amount of journalistic research that will be of particular interest to South Florida audiences.

We lucky westerners get to see it in all its hair-raising, stomach-churning glory, and that's a wonderful thing.

Sitting through this stage-bound, talky, stiffly-acted movie reminded me of having to endure the Hall of Presidents attraction at Walt Disney World.

Heartbeats (2011)
There are moments of heartbreaking beauty in it - although Dolan is still a work in progress. He'll get better - he's immensely talented - but he's not quite there yet.

The film will probably play a lot better in dorm rooms with plenty of beer kegs and bongs on hand, but in the confines of a movie theater, it's deadly - the sort of bad comedy Mel Brooks made late in his career, until he finally smartened up and quit.

Source Code (2011)
The script by Ben Ripley doesn't come up with enough obstacles to throw in the hero's path, and his budding romance with the doomed Christina feels more like a studio mandate than an organic development.

Kaboom (2011)
With Kaboom, Araki takes a huge step backward from the maturity and restraint he demonstrated in 2004's Mysterious Skin, his best and most-assured film to date (and, tellingly, his only adaptation of someone else's material).

Potiche (2011)
The film's main draw, though, is old-fashioned star power -- particularly that of the luminescent Deneuve, whose screen aura only burns brighter with every passing year.

The graphic sex scenes radiate an uncommon heat, and Im can pull off a hugely effective shock when he wants to.

Limitless (2011)
For all its peripatetic energy, Limitless still winds up with the same-old blazing guns and wanton destruction of property. No matter how smart you may be, Hollywood will figure out a way to dumb you down.

Marchand just has no idea how to resolve the elaborate puzzle he's built, and once Black Heaven has to start providing some answers, it collapses into a pile of hackneyed contrivances and ridiculous revelations.

I can't imagine anyone's ever speaking about this movie with fondness other than the people who made it, and maybe their close relatives.

Orgasm, Inc. (2011)
Many documentaries lose focus or become unwieldy as their directors uncover unexpected facts about their subjects, but Canner is able to keep Orgasm Inc. trained on its eponymous theme ...

The film ends on a note of graceful, heartbreaking beauty that Tati would have admired for its lack of sentimentality. A lot of what precedes that ending, though, is precious and slight and a little too fanciful.

The Eagle (2011)
Tatum has the strong-jawed good looks and stoic demeanor of a natural-born movie star. What he lacks is a sense of inner life, a spark of internal fire: When the camera trains on him, you can practically hear the wind whistling through his head.

This is an impressive production and technical feat, but through most of it, I kept thinking about how difficult the filming conditions must have been, and not about the lives of the men in front of me.

Somewhere (2010)
The best movie directors aren't just masters of technical craft: They also are artists capable of showing you the world through their eyes -- of making you see and feel exactly what they do.

The movie had been billed as a throwback to the action flicks of the 1980s, but that pitch turns out to be false advertising.

Restrepo (2010)
Restrepo avoids political discussion. It just revels in the heroism of these impossibly young, brave soldiers who follow orders that at times seem pointless because following them is what their country has asked them to do.
