Reynolds is almost good enough to stand up to the gargantuan tower of emptiness that is Green Lantern, but he's fighting a losing battle.

Super 8 (2011)
Super 8 is such an authentic homage to the glory and excess of Spielberg that it barely has its own identity. It's been body-snatched by its own influences.

The Trip (2011)
I marvel at the way Winterbottom and his actors have captured the essence of your garden-variety midlife crisis in this lively and often bitterly funny two-hour distillation.

Bello is, as usual, a compellingly feminine force in the part of a woman in free fall, grasping at branches on her way down.

Mr. Nice (2011)
As a portrait of a charming rapscallion and entrepreneur, Mr. Nice serves admirably.

A quest movie that's too long on destination to make for much of a journey, Kung Fu Panda 2 is nevertheless scenic, inventively playful, and successfully serious when it wants to be.

It follows the same essential pattern as its predecessor, but the ingenious loopiness is gone; the mechanism behind it grinds instead of whirrs.

This Must Be the Place is a bewildering piece of work, a picture that may have initially been guided by a sweet impulse but takes a sharp left turn into crazytown.

The Skin I Live In isn't quite as el sicko as I'd hoped it would be, but the depraved gleam in its eye its nonetheless irresistible.

Melancholia (2011)
If it's true that misery loves company, maybe this is von Trier's way of reaching out. Melancholia may be as close as he'll ever come to wrapping us in a bear hug.

Strong visuals don't necessarily equal strong visual storytelling. If Malick could tell a story mostly with pictures - and faces - why would he need so many voice-overs?

Bridesmaids (2011)
Bridesmaids obviously strives to seem modern, but too often it mistakes crassness for freshness.

First-time writer and director Dan Rush seems aware of the generic obstacles he has set for himself, and takes a headlong run at both before clearing them in the critical moment.

For my money, the best Allen movie in 10 years, or maybe even close to 20...

Thor (2011)
Branagh was meant to work on this scale. And even if ambition doesn't always equal vision, with Thor Branagh brings the two pretty closely in line.

The scenes have a dreary, perfunctory feel, and the few laughs that make contact seem to have escaped from the air locker securing the film from any threat of natural circulation.

Hardly romantic and barely a comedy, Something Borrowed hovers in that damp gray region of movies that are often characterized as "cute," though it has barely enough character to stand up even to that bland adjective.

The Beaver (2011)
Foster has crept out on a limb here, showing us a grown-up human being who's in terrible pain, and for whom there are no easy answers.

Prom (2011)
Not one kilojoule past perfectly competent, Prom has sweetness, nonthreatening conflict, and enough personality to distance it from the chilling anodyne of Disney's television vehicles.
