Many scenes in The Messenger feel merely illustrative, not designed to develop characters and story so much as to make the point, over and over, that the home front can be as harrowing as the front lines.

Do you like montages, but grow bored with the tedious plot bits in between? Then Pirate Radio is the movie for you.

This is no more a kids' movie for kids than Where the Wild Things Are; it's a film strictly for Wes Anderson fans of all ages. By now, they should know who they are.

Precious punishes the audience with scene after scene of squalor and hopelessness, but like last year's poverty-can-be-entertaining hit Slumdog Millionaire, it rewards them for hanging on 'til the end.

The holiday spirit feels real, but the film does not.

The Fourth Kind is terminally awkward in the way it meshes fake real footage with faker fake footage. It isn't required to be convincing as fact, but it doesn't convince as fiction, either.

Motherhood (2009)
The film treats the responsibilities of parenthood like another film would treat cancer, as a dream-killing condition to be endured until it passes or kills you. As a contraceptive device, that works brilliantly.

Amelia (2009)
[Swank is] so constrained by mannerisms that she never gets beyond the character's surface -- although to be fair, trying to import feeling into the movie's stilted dialogue is like trying to fly a plane blindfolded.

(Untitled) (2009)
Shelton's radiant performance as the brothers' elusive object of desire helps rescue (Untitled) from an occasional listlessness that comes as a consequence of Parker's nuanced, gentle jabs at the art world.

Ong Bak 2 (2009)
The fight scenes are kinetic and varied, and pick up a unique flavor from the backdrop of meticulously recreated hillside villages.

Inconsistency is the curse of the anthology film, but the entries in the omnibus New York, I Love You are united by their near-total lack of interest.

Jaud isn't telling a story so much as he's making a case, and while his case is persuasive, it doesn't really work as a movie.

A flagrantly ridiculous thriller that tries to retrofit Saw to function as a mainstream, semi-respectable vigilante picture about the failings of our justice system.

Araya (1959)
The movie is visually stunning, deploying fluid camerawork and stark black-and-white imagery to record the hardscrabble lives of Venezuelans living and working on a remote salt marsh.

The movie's saving grace is Weixler, who manages to seem effortlessly natural without resorting to whiny faux naturalism. As she did in Teeth, Weixler grounds an otherwise glib conceptual exercise through the force of her presence.

Lee doesn't reinvent the wheel when it comes to filming live theater, but he moves the camera artfully and edits with an energy that matches the music. And he makes good use of close-ups, capturing the sweaty faces of a troupe of remarkable performers.
