I get a kick out of realizing which portions of the trilogy the show’s creators have chopped up and rearranged, delighted to be shown parallels among characters... and still find Benioff and Weiss to be great at writing memorable, economical dialogue.

"3 Body Problem," which oscillates from murder mystery to extraterrestrial sensibilities that should tickle any Carl Sagan fan's interest, sometimes feels too big for itself. Conversely, that large scope is also what makes it so compelling.

Riveting and unpredictable. It's been a while since the first season, but I'm still looking forward to the second. One of the best Netflix series for sure.

Again Benioff and Weiss are screwing the pooch after being handed some wonderful source material. After spilling most of the reveals early on, they seem to want to rush the plot out of the way in order to focus on character drama they invented. What intrigue remains of the plot is largely due to it being very poor at focussing on whatever just happened. We switch from the starlit sky blinking on and off for all humanity to see ..to the mysterious VR videogame part of the plot. When we cut back, humanity has resolved whatever existential crisis this elicited off screen and everybody now discusses the event as if it is a mildly challenging crossword puzzle. The result is a bad mashup of soap-drama and hackney science fiction, with what remains of the original work being treated as data-entry to be shoe-horned in wherever it may fit. It is painful to watch, but at least the lighting is better this time.

The first series is good, but gets progressively less interesting, as imagination and mystery are replaced by exposition and character interplay of the type you can find in any drama series. And for such expansive cerebral sci-fi, 3 Body Problem always feels a little too shackled to the here and now.

My wife and kid thought it was boring at first but it kept me interested. I of course are interested in shows like this. I look forward to second seasons
