Watching them battle the elements... is exciting armchair escapism. But it's not terribly engaging, as there's little chance to develop much of a rooting interest for any of the teams or individuals along the way.

Showed off some beautiful scenery, but spent little time with most of the contestants, instead concentrating on just a few of the most colorful characters.

In short, it's more or less half Survivor and half The Amazing Race, but given that it's a new game every episode, you don't have to give up on the show just because you've missed a week.

What makes the show interesting are the various ways that the teams cope with the natural obstacles that arise when navigating these areas, most of which are more grueling than they originally appear.

I found 72 Hours the more enjoyable for its lack of pretense and the speed with which it does its business.

It's all beautiful to look at for the sullenly landlocked, if rather tedious in the familiar trappings employed to build suspense and create a sense of jeopardy.
