At first, 800 Words seemed like a cross between the old U.S. TV series Northern Exposure and Dougie Howser, MD, in that it featured lots of quirky characters in an out-of-the way town and the lead character reflecting on life through his writings. But over the course of the season the show grew on us as the characters began to be fleshed out and some plots and themes unfolded. The upshot is a show that's gotten much better (including in Seasons 2 and 3) as it's gone on.

Refreshingly different but it owes success to the ability of the cast to hold it together.

Travel brochure with plastic characters, full of predictable cliches - an utterly boring waste of time. The daughter is a completey unlikable and uninteresting character who overwhelms most of the episodes. It feels like they are trying to create a plotline with no story.
