9JKL: Season 1 Reviews

August 8, 2019
Perhaps the best of '9JKL' is its cast. And yet their performances are exaggerated and exempt from any hint of subtlety. [Full Review in Spanish]

The show's one-joke premise - parents can be such buttinskis! - wears thin fast despite the likability of Ms. Lavin and Mr. Gould.

9JKL is the kind of show that could have existed in the '90s, early '00s, or today, and still been panned no matter when it debuted.

I like the cast, and it's beyond cute that the creator/writer/executive producer is Feuerstein's real-life wife, Dana Klein. But this is painfully unfunny. It's a chore to sit through.

Everyone is far too involved in each other's business, because that's how sitcoms work, but the show's screechy self-loathing makes that seem damning and toxic rather than just antic and fun.
October 5, 2017
The pilot promises a competent if familiar sitcom comedy that's more comfortable than daring - and that's OK.
October 4, 2017
Except for the randier jokes, it seems to have been mined from a bygone era of TV, complete with laugh track.

Mediocre comedy fails to impress, despite talented cast.

To be fair, 9JKL does raise some important questions: principally, what bridge is Gould living under that he had to take this show?

Here's a comedy that just reeks of CBS.

Ugh. It's this waste of talent that is most irritating about 9JKL.
October 2, 2017
Just about every plot turn on 9JKL can be seen coming, and the parents are so gratingly oblivious and interfering that it's hard to get invested in the plight of Josh, or any other character.

At least he (Feuerstein) gets to work with his writer wife, Dana Klein,, with whom he created the show. (They say based on their lives. I say, condolences.)

... a mediocre and egregiously trite sitcom premiering Monday on CBS.

Granted, sharing a scene with either Gould or Lavin, or both, is going to be a challenge for any actor, but the show has promise.

These tenants should be evicted from the schedule.
