Season 2
American Vandal

Critics Consensus

American Vandal trades one type of potty humor for another in an ambitious second season that manages to double down on the explicit gags while subtly addressing serious social issues.

Critic Reviews for American Vandal Season 2

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (16)

It's better than anyone could have expected, but a little less than they might have hoped.

It's more interested in the truth of true crime than the crime itself, and in treating its characters like the flawed, frightened people they are, it finds it. All that, and poop jokes, too.

Season two offers a winning variation on that pitiable theme, with Sarah Burns' Vonnegut stan, Miss Montgomery.

It might trade in a few of its old laughs for something slightly different, but it's still a wonderful little miracle that this show can exist at all.

Though its themes aren't as serious as racism in America, they're still potent and palpable. American Vandal's execution of its mission last season was pretty flawless.

It works slightly better thanks to its believable characters, amazing twists, and unexpectedly incisive and highly accurate social commentary. [Full review in Spanish]

American Vandal is STILL well worth watching and should be talked about.

The best thing about the show is its self-awareness and how it truly understands the modern teenage mind.

Dec 20, 2018 | Full Review…

The combination of outlandish jokes and morally malleable teens wrapped up in an innate understanding of today's technology adds up to make Vandal one of the most authentic shows on TV.

Dec 18, 2018 | Full Review…

Like the first season, "American Vandal" 2 is confidently made, weaving in parodies (particularly of famed documentarian Errol Morris) with a light hand.

Dec 18, 2018 | Full Review…

Like season one, American Vandal has crafted a shockingly complex, genuinely intriguing mystery that it unpacks in equally clever ways.

Dec 18, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It takes an inherently crude, childish concept and imbues it with stakes that feel life-or-death.

Audience Reviews for American Vandal: Season 2

  • May 12, 2020
again, a great social commentary of how social media controls our lives. Again its seems repetitive at times but better than the first season and glad to have a conclusion this time around.
  • Mar 25, 2020
One of the best series I've seen, wish there was another season
  • Sep 14, 2019
didnt feel as real and immersive and stupid as season 1. the acting wasnt as good either, but the comedy was more in your face and the plot, more genuinely interesting.
  • Jun 23, 2019
Smart, layered & funny meta commentary on not just true crime documentaries, but on the very pursuit of truth in documentaries. And on the hubris to think that documentaries can tell the unmitigated truth.
  • Feb 02, 2019
It is a shame Netflix cancelled it.
  • Dec 03, 2018
this show is amazing going to the writing the characters the music the summations they get in shows so much potential to these show's amazing ways also creatives these show can work i hope there a next season for this show it funny at times but can be serious it a good thing

PROS: Mystery really gets you hooked, acting is solid for a bunch of no namers -- especially basketball player, good to see the likable Peter and Sam again. CONS: Significantly fewer laughs this season, ending felt anti climatic and kind of dark. Last episode was kind of a downer.
  • Nov 20, 2018
The plot felt somewhat lackluster compared to the previous season, however the characters were just as enjoyable.
  • Nov 18, 2018
You wouldn't expect such low-stakes action to be this compelling, but it is.
  • Nov 16, 2018
What a strange but good show
