Critics Consensus

While Amazing Stories' aspirations are admirable, it feels more like a dated retread than a heartfelt reboot.

Critic Reviews for Amazing Stories Season 1

All Critics (35) | Top Critics (12)

Fluffy and safe, it's not the strongest endorsement of what the rest of the series might bring.

Mar 9, 2020 | Rating: C | Full Review…

I like this reboot or at least like the idea of it.

The upside of any anthology series is the possibility that the next installment can completely turn things around with a brand-new tale. Still, if this is the show's best foot forward, it doesn't imply much optimism.

When this ending comes the audience may wish they'd have watched something more exciting instead.

Sep 4, 2020 | Full Review…

With only 52 minutes of running time, The Cellar feels like a TV movie condensed to the length of a TV episode. Its characters are painted in wide brush strokes.

Jun 23, 2020 | Full Review…

"The Cellar" is a sweet and safe time-hopping love story that feels very on-brand for the type of out-there, ultimately unchallenging, tales Spielberg's original series was spinning back in the '80s.

Mar 11, 2020 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

"Amazing Stories" is pure escapism with a hopeful heart. It has no other purpose than to entertain.

Mar 11, 2020 | Full Review…

Maybe the show will get better; I hope it does. But with so many shows on so many different platforms right now, it seems like Amazing Stories blew its one chance to make a good first impression.

Mar 10, 2020 | Full Review…

This show should have been a home run. In my opinion the missed opportunity lies in three areas: the story, the pacing and the direction.

Mar 10, 2020 | Full Review…

It's too early to tell for sure, but the only amazing thing about "Amazing Stories" so far is that the new version retained and updated the original opening sequence, complete with that exciting musical theme by John Williams.

Mar 9, 2020 | Full Review…

The premiere episode has its virtues, starting with the solid promise and the romantic chemistry between the leads. Visually, however, it's not exactly dazzling.

Mar 9, 2020 | Full Review…

Optimism isn't a bad thing to have on TV shows, but when that's the only thing you've got going for you, living up to "amazing" seems like a reach.

Audience Reviews for Amazing Stories: Season 1

  • Sep 21, 2020
It's just really really unimagiantive. Time traveler finds love. Dead girl has to do one last thing. Secret alien invasion. Accidental Superpowers and time traveler is a fish out of water. Those stories have been told a thousand times and they've been told better. The characters are cardboard cutouts, the acting is okay but nothing special and even the effects are sometimes pretty rough. Even the look of the show isn't anything special. Given Spielberg's involvement, that's pretty sad. It's hard doing a good anthology series these days since pretty much everything has already been done by the original Twilight Zone in the 50s and 60s. The lacklustre reboot of that show makes that pretty clear. It's rather obvious, that Apple needed an IP for its streaming service and thought about actual stories second. Well it seems like there weren't any worth telling. If this gets a second season, they should really focus on coming up with some original stories. Or at least some clever twist on the old ones. Maybe making the episodes feature length could help with characterisation and giving the directors a little more creative freedom, could help with the boring look. As it stands, it's pretty forgettable.

Some things should just be left as they were. This 2020 reboot is like a series of high definition lifetime network movies with generic story lines and politically correct characters inserted to try and make itself relevant today. The awe and wonder the original series brought is just not here.
  • Sep 06, 2020
Dear me, the stories, the acting are pretty poor. I struggled to stay the full length of each episode. The only reason I stuck with it was because the original series was different and mostly entertaining. My advice, do something else with your time.

Watched the first two. I'm certainly not against gay couples being in movies, or anyone's sexual preferences, but the politics injected into the first two episodes is shameful. A demographic that amounts to 4.5% of the population in 100% of the first two episodes.... bleh how political do you have to be? I kind of liked the first episode, the second was kind of boring. I'm not going to watch a boring show that forces politics into what is supposed to be entertainment. No thanks. 👎🏼

They made you think that this was the new Stephen Spielberg's hit, when is all the opposite, they had a grate opportunity to make this big and to take advantage of this series potential. Amazing stories is OK but is not what they promised us it was going to be.

I used to watch this as a child and loved the show. But this version for Apple TV is terrible. The acting is terrible and I am not sure who did the casting but its just reallly not good. I'm not sure why they remade this so bad but oh well. I kept watching through 4 episodes but stopped after the last one.

Ugh. Watered down and boring. How did Amblin & Apple spend around $10M an episode on this. Really unimpressive
  • Apr 21, 2020
The original is one of the all time greats. The new one is an unwatchable mess.
  • Apr 19, 2020
Was expecting something akin to the impact the original series had way back, but I was drowned in the sea of nauseating sentimentality. Spielberg can't be involved in this ? Some of the lamest plot lines I've ever witnessed. The second episode, quite literally, stereotypes people of colour and badly. Unremarkable wouldn't come close.
  • Apr 19, 2020
I was stuck on episode 2 trying to convince myself that I was simply not getting the work of "today's most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers". What a disappointing show covered by renowned names! The only positive thing the creators did was involving more talented yet unknown actors. The question is: why didn't they do the same with the screenwriters? At least they would try harder than a retro clock on the wall in the basement used as a time portal, and a girl's ghost witnessing her own funeral...
