This drama series examines the complexities and consequences of an illicit sexual affair between a young teacher and her student. Claire is a new teacher at Westerbrook High School in Texas. Dissatisfied in her marriage to her college sweetheart, Claire's life changes when Eric, a personable teenager in her English class, takes an interest in her. Popular and outgoing, Eric is the captain of the soccer team and nearly inseparable from his best friends. Everything seems perfect on the surface, but Eric is forced to juggle the pressures of school, applying for college and a part-time job, all while helping take care of his two younger brothers. Claire and Eric discover an undeniable connection that allows them to escape their lives, but their relationship accelerates faster than either could anticipate. The permanent damage left in the wake of their illicit affair becomes impossible for them, and their friends and family, to ignore.

Critics Consensus

Beautiful, but slight, A Teacher's attempts to unpack its cautionary tale are admirable, even if its approach is too muted to make a meaningful impact.

Teacher-student affairs are often portrayed as sexy, salacious scandals. A Teacher gets that they're really about abuse of power. Go to Full Review

Kate Mara's work... is interesting, because it gives her character a humanity that is difficult to construct as long as she is aware from which place the viewer perceives her. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Jose A Aug 18 The movie presents an interesting theme but could explore it in more depth. The 20-minute format feels too short, making the story — especially the ending — seem rushed. The soundtrack leaves room for improvement, though the acting is convincing. See more Fabrizio L 01/22/2025 Initially a good romance/drama, unfortunately ruined by the over the top morality that distinguishes today's society. See more Kers t @Kshinsing 09/05/2023 The topic is potentially triggering, but it's well done, good acting, decent script. I have a 14 year old son, and it did trigger me. There are no two ways about it, what Kate Mara's character did, was beyond wrong. I am surprised that there was no scene where Eric's apparently very sensible and composed mother had a meltdown about the teacher. If anyone did that to my son, I would have to be restrained, at least for a while. I hate Claire, and it's just fictional. See more slyc3 12/31/2022 writing is poor, pacing is poor, overall just lackluster in anything that would make this a somewhat impactful show See more 04/11/2022 good watch. from the perspective of a teenager, the teenager scenes were done really well. realistic. See more 03/24/2022 I feel bad giving something low stars which was quite engaging to begin with. I think that's where the good news ends. I did not see this show as one about consent at all. I would strongly recommend 'Normal People', a BBC series, which was far more effective in this. Every country has their own age of consent. Teacher-student relationship is sacrosanct, though, but this does not end just at school but throughout university and onwards, in my opinion, especially once we are talking about adults. Also, a few years age gap is also quite common in everyday life and that does not make for criminals. In the show, I saw the two individuals as falling in love with each other and equal partners in their relationship as adults. It would have been far more practical to ask the teacher to move to a different job without criminalising her. I also felt little sympathy for the man in the last episode as he was slinging it all on the woman. If he didn't want to go the the university to check it out or take tutoring lessons, why didn't he discuss it with his lovely mother and ask her to help instead? He was old enough to know that he had a choice. No good deed goes unpunished. Whilst the woman did this for him, so he didn't have to go through it alone, like she had to in her life, he used that to accuse her of manipulating him into a relationship. Pedophilia is a gross crime and this series only serves to marginalise it. It would be an entirely different situation if the age gap was 18 and 8, for instance. One can vote who has a finger to the button but not wise enough to choose who to sleep with - doesn't make sense. Since both were of age in the show (be it age of consent or over 18,) the cries of the man at age 19-20 were really that of a break-up, where the woman due to reasons of parole violations or societal abandonment (job, divorce, other parents), chose to step aside. I was truly disappointed by the story line and the direction, which meant that after serving jail time, the woman experience a 180 degree turnaround of her feelings. Didn't seem believable. On the whole, completely unfair to the woman and predatory men and women will only use this as an excuse to argue out of their crimes when they are really committed. See more Read all reviews
