While the destination may be incredibly predictable, the journey is more than worth the ride thanks to a script that is in equal parts both funny and surprisingly humane.

Nothing replaces the experience, and the stories that are not based on it are, by force, very poor and cheesy. [Full Review in Spanish]

Maybe this all sounds a bit petty. It's frustrating, though, because Gervais is better than this.

You can imagine my disappointment that his new series, After Life, isn't...too bad.

This is self-pity as comedy, a philosophical thought bubble by way of plot.

As a whole, the first six-episode arc is a healing and beautiful story about growth.

The problem is the wildly swerving tone - from obnoxious to sentimental to caustic to maudlin to pointlessly vile.

A main problem for After Life is that Tony's surge of misanthropy isn't especially funny or smart.

Ricky Gervais' After Life, unspooling in six eminently bingeable half-hour episodes...is bitter and sweet, sad and funny, cruel and tender, cynical and sentimental, heartless and heartwarming, all at the same time and sometimes even in the same scene.

After Life, for all its casually entertaining cruelties, is a show about moving on and keeping faith with our essential humanity. From the bleak hell of grief, Gervais has created something redemptive and beautiful.

Alternately acerbically funny and heartbreaking, it provides a good outlet for [Ricky Gervais'] scathing and dark wit.

After Life...is infuriatingly difficult to define. It is by turns outrageous, uplifting, unflinching, sad, hilarious and angry. Mostly, it's an exercise in melancholy, and I adored it.

Once in a while, all the pieces come together...The bad news is the show is short (six episodes), so the parts that don't work carry a lot of weight.

I think it's fine, even helpful, to make jokes about death and depression. But for such gags to work, there has to be a certain veracity, an emotional truth that's conspicuous by its absence here.

It's more absurd than funny. It's a scream.

Ricky Gervais' new Netflix series about grief and loss is both endearing and abrasive. Textbook Gervais, if you will.

Its pleasures outweigh its problems.
March 9, 2019
As is often the case in Gervais' work, kindness ultimately prevails in this story of an embittered man in a world that has taken so much from him.

A melancholy series that successfully tells the story of dealing with the loss of a loved one. [Full Review in Spanish]

One of the problems with "After Life" is that we can see the full arc of that Scrooge story line long before it arrives. The predictability doesn't ruin the series, which can be quickly consumed in three hours.
