Almost Human: Season 1 (2013 - 2014)

Critic Consensus: Almost Human presents enough action and humor to please both young watchers and fans of the sci-fi genre, but mainstream audiences may find it bland.

Tv Season Info

"Fringe" producer J.H. Wyman created this sci-fi crime drama set in the year 2048, when John Kennex (Karl Urban), a veteran Los Angeles detective with mental and physical baggage, returns to the force, but struggles to adjust to the mandate that requires human officers to be paired with robots. Fortunately for Kennex's psyche -- not to mention his well-being -- he's eventually partnered with one called Dorian (Michael Ealy), an older model of android that's capable of expressing emotions, which will make all the difference in the world as they depend on each other to battle terrorists, drug rings and cyber-criminals in all corners of the city.

Critic Reviews for Almost Human Season 1

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (23)

It was, at its core, a police procedural but it was heightened by the high-quality special effects, the heavy sci-fi, and the chemistry between the two leads.

Beyond profundities laced with humor, the action drama from J.J. Abrams, created by Fringe's J.H. Wyman and starring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy, is a visual feast.

The pilot episode at least, balances that sense of dread with intrigue, humor, and emotion.

The premiere episode of the series otherwise lacks enough imagination to make it stand out from the sci-fi cop movies and TV shows we've seen before.

[It] keeps twisting and turning itself into a series of unwieldy plot knots.

More to the point, though, Almost Human turns out to be engaging, both as a cop tale and a new twist on the buddy dynamic.

I wanted this to be better. It's fine. But not great.

From Producer J.J. Abrams comes the sci-fi cop drama Almost Human. Set in the near future where new technologies are leading to an escalation in crime, the police force begins to supplement its ranks with androids. Season 1 follows Det. John Kennex who returns to the force after suffering a trauma, and is paired with an outmoded android that has a "synthetic soul" that allows him to think and act human. Several intriguing continuing story threads are set up in the first few episodes, but after a while they're dropped and forgotten as the series turns into a weekly crime procedural. Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, and Minka Kelly give solid performances and make for a good assemble cast. And the special effects are especially well-done, making for some fascinating future technologies. Almost Human delivers an exciting and action-packed 13 episode first season, but it's not always sure of what type of show it wants to be.
