      Almost Family: Season 1 Reviews

Not unlike Jane the Virgin, if you can overlook the very awful circumstances that set up the show... you'll find a heartfelt connection between a few lost souls for whom this discovery is the straw on the overburdened back of their messy lives.

It's played for laughs and it is funny.

It's impossible to watch this drama about a fertility doctor... without being reminded of real-life cases, and the impact of such fraudulent, unethical conduct.

Unsettling family drama is profoundly ill-conceived.

The series format suggests they might find a whole lot more sibs along the way.

I would be all for a show about three adult women learning they're sisters, but Almost Family leans heavily on a gimmicky premise it doesn't need, one that ultimately tanks it.

It's a very weird hodgepodge of characters and motivations, made doubly awkward for being set against the backdrop of an investigation into Leon for fraud and sexual assault... Yet, despite all the weirdness, [it] is strangely not that interesting.

Eh...the story isn't done well overall.

Almost Family has a lot of blind spots, but believability shouldn't be one of them.

      Full Review | Original Score: D+ | Oct 3, 2019

The problem with "Almost" isn't that it's about a serious crime - there is plenty of good and great television made about criminal activity - but that its world is wildly out of balance.

The story and the characters are interesting enough, but whether or not it can sustain its momentum for an entire season is unclear. And I hate to say it, but where the story might be going is entirely predictable.

Almost Family has some good moments, but isn't good enough to overcome its dumbest plot devices.

Standout performances and what looks to be a sure-fire, durable premise give Fox's Almost Family the key ingredients of a potentially long-running, soapy serial drama.

If Almost Family is anything, it's a series in conflict with itself.

So "Almost Family" made Hutton's Bechley an almost-loveable rogue, and his offspring almost-unbothered by the almost crime he perpetrated against them and countless others. No "almost" about that. It's flat-out creepy.

Sometimes, a series can't overcome the fundamental grossness of its premise, no matter what else it has to offer.

      Full Review | Oct 1, 2019

Easily the most promising series of the fall broadcast season: funny, poignant, and drenched in the chemistry between three charismatic actresses playing women who suddenly learn they're sisters.

      Full Review | Sep 30, 2019

Almost Family doesn't really want to deal with female anger, or the revolting nature of its own premise. Instead, it aims to spin stories about community and family that are just so darn heartwarming, we'll forget they're all based on a fertility felony.

The topic is hot, but the tone is all over the place and the dialogue is egregiously dopey.

Do you think we mischaracterized a critic's review?
