Critic Consensus: It treads familiar ground, but Alphas succeeds on the strength of its characters and brisk pacing.

The basic premise "people with different powers combining them to fight for a worthy cause" may be ancient, but it still works.

Things just don't jell very well on any level in the all-important introductory episode.

Alphas is hardly the alpha show in this supernatural-hero genre, but it's still engaging.

Alphas at least has the grace to tread wryly and lightly.

The soul of the show is its conflicted "heroes," truly tortured, in palpable ways. There's no cartoonery here. Just adult adventure and angst.

It seems like Alphas doesn't know what it wants to be, so it tries a little of everything.

From the first scene, it has a confidence most series take at least two seasons to develop. That it does so is especially surprising considering that the underlying concept is hardly inspiring.

A series that deserves its renewal.

It needs to not spoon-feed the audience so mechanically, and find some things about its characters that aren't so clichéd.
