I'm a huge HUGE fan of the film, and I admit that I have never seen the stage production - though I am aware of how the film deviates from that. This production stands on its own. Too many people have asked why this adaptation needed to be made. This production doesn't need to answer that, but it more than justifies its existence with careful storytelling and deliberate, careful decision making. The acting is phenomenal. I have always loved Paul Bettany and he is at his best in this. Will Sharpe is not merely defensible casting, he is extraordinarily good casting - giving Mozart tremendous depth, range, and complexity that perfectly capitalizes on the script. If you find his ethnicity a distraction - what does that say about you? Gabrielle Creevy gives us a Stanzi that makes us revel in her larger role in this adaptation. And - Rory Kinnear is a fabulously brusque Joseph II. I will watch this again. And then again. It’s not a "woke joke." It’s that most people can see past things like race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, as evidenced by the fact that YOU WERE THE ONLY REVIEWER— Audience or critic, obvi— to so much as MENTION the casting of Will Sharpe in that role. Everyone else loved, or didn’t love, the series, but you are the only one who decided to inflict your ignorant political opinions on people just looking for reviews on a movie website. Bettany and Sharpe gave award winning performances. The story line was compelling and production excellent.
