American Gods is a psychedelic spree that looks like it was designed to beat down any attempt to describe it coherently.

In American Gods, Starz's gorgeous, ambitious adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2001 fantasy novel, humans, be they slaves or migrants, bring their individual gods with them when they land in America.

When you get right down to it, American Gods is simply a gripping, entertaining tall tale buoyed by a standout cast.

The Starz adaptation of Neil Gaiman's bestselling fantasy novel is so outrageous in its ambitions and so spectacular to look at, you may get caught up in the illusion and wonder only later, "What the heck was that about?"

When American Gods does get all supernatural, it's beautiful.

American Gods is a long, slow burn, but if it stays so true to the novel it's based on, the bang, when it comes, will be unforgettable.

So many characters pass in a blur... that there's a danger of the story arc getting trampled. But the thrill ride is so stylish I'm more than happy to keep the faith. Or lose it, depending on how you read your Gaiman.

It's an adaptation that feels like the story I remember, even if it does have a few more swerves and dalliances from Gaiman's text.

American Gods is terribly slow and portentous, quite aware of its own heft. With eerie music, slow-motion sequences and a fondness for deep chiaroscuro, it comes on like a particularly long and mystical car ad.

In its first season, American Gods suggests there is room for every interpretation of gods -- and that designation is not just reserved for the entities we pray to.

When it isn't trying to engulf viewers with extravagant setpieces and discombobulating plot shifts, American Gods demonstrates its potential as a meditation on the compatibility of ancient traditions and modern life.

As a piece of storytelling, American Gods makes Hannibal look like The Andy Griffith Show.

Those [gods] who are introduced ... are fascinating enough to purchase the viewers' patience with the relatively leisurely speed that "American Gods" travels through the plot. It takes time to construct a world worthy of worship.
