American Gods is terribly slow and portentous, quite aware of its own heft. With eerie music, slow-motion sequences and a fondness for deep chiaroscuro, it comes on like a particularly long and mystical car ad.

If you're a fan of Gaiman's work, and patient with slow-moving scenes of thinly developed characters speechifying, you may like it. Others might want to proceed with caution.

American Gods might oscillate between light and shadows, between past and present, but in terms of articulating a comprehensible story, it feels like a lot of smoke and mirrors.

That somber, oppressive tone extends to the performances and the writing, too, but the worst thing about American Gods is its absurdly slow pace.

Whittle's unfortunate lack of chemistry with Browning is a further detriment to forming any lasting emotional investment in its leads, though it couldn't hurt to have a full episode of her and the jilted Betty Gilpin driving cross country.
