Critics Consensus

American Horror Stories has its moments, but a lack of consistent narrative quality among installments and not enough scares make for an unsatisfying whole.

It progressively got worse and worse as the episode continued......

The original AHS series is bad. It is. Unwatchable at times. It's literally lowest common denominator fodder…the equivalent of McDonalds if they created a cliched ‘horror' series designed to appeal to little kids and people who aren't smart enough to understand what horror is. This series, however, is worse. Somehow the creators topped themselves in making a series that is so unwatchable that it almost seems like it was written to be as laughable and cliched as possible. If you've made it through the whole series, you deserve a reward. Or payment. The writers of this garbage should have paid people who have suffered through it. It's literally that bad.

I'm a huge fan of AHS, so I gave this show a chance. It was a major disappointment. Save yourself the time and don't watch this show.

I have seen scarier things in public toilets

Pretty disappointed. I was hoping for a good spin off, but like many spin offs, this show couldn't live up to the original. Episodes 3, 5, and 6 are the only good ones I'd say. The first two and the last are the worst. I'd say don't waste your time with this. Just watch the original, which is actually very good with great actors as well.

(with the exception of episodes 1, 2, and 7 which tie into the main series), Each episode clearly tries to pay homage to the horror movies of the past like Exorcist and Omen but fails miserably at pretty much every turn. With an anthology series comes the challenge of creating new and relatable characters every episode. They don't have to be likable, just relatable or at least believable. It's successfully been done elsewhere but it's not the case here. It's one thing to dislike a character because of who they are (Joffrey in Game of Thrones) and it's another entirely to dislike them because they're terribly written or annoying (most leads in this season). Most of the dialogue is cringey, seemingly written by someone middle-aged who thinks they know how teens talk (see the Steve Buscemi "How do you do, fellow kids?" meme), with most episodes having a silly ending or missing any kind of thoughtful twist or revelation. A few familiar faces return from the main series as either new or returning characters but it's not enough to save this series. What you would be better off doing for this series is using its single-episode format as a chance to wrap up any dangling sub-plot threads from the main series with an episode or two every season (and lord knows there are quite a few with every season) instead of trying to rehash its glory days with "loose sequels"

Mistakes all over the place, stupid narrative, terribly acted, disgustingly written, this spin off is not only disrespectful to the original show, but to the people who decided to watch it. What an actual piece of shit.

The Feral episode was the best!! We need more of this and less murder house

I absolutely loved this show, and I genuinely hope they make more seasons. I especially loved this show because it was much more modern than AHS, and told stories from the perspective of young adults/teens. It's as though they packed a story that would have been told over 1 season in AHS, into one episode. I think this show will really appeal to a younger audience more than AHS does, as they packed so much intriguing & entertaining content into each episode. I hope that this show will introduce the AHS universe to younger viewers and that American Horror Stories is renewed for season 2 because it offers the opportunity for various directors and writers to create fresh, interesting, and diverse new stories.

Horrible. Especially those last few episodes.
