It has pretensions of depth and ambition, but really all it's about is whatever cool thing Murphy and Falchuk wanted to do next, hurled at the screen with such reckless abandon that none of it works.

Like all of their collaborations, the show is a mess, but it's a really intriguing one, with just enough promising (and genuinely scary) material to balance out the more ridiculous, unintentionally hilarious stuff.

One of the most addictive programs of 2011.

FX's Horror Story is insanely good.

The one show this season that feels brazen and exciting-hard to look away from and Glee-fully unafraid to offend.

Fans of the horror genre - not the splatter trash of the Saw or Chainsaw Massacre series, but the creepy, psychological, and, yes, sexy, gory stuff of classics like Rosemary's Baby or The Shining - won't be disappointed.

Amusing to watch, but not particularly scary. "Creepy" seems the better word.

It's a lot to process, and at times too much to take. Still, Horror Story often is a wonder.

In truth, even many adults might not be ready for the show's frank depiction of everyday horrors that we'd too often rather forget.

For all its faults, I will probably watch every episode of American Horror Story, at least its first season. Partly because while it is a disorganized, unbelievable mess, it's often disorganized and unbelievable in an interesting way.

This gourmet junk food gives you some pure evil, and it takes some axes to some evildoers, and the American type represented has a predilection for French maids. Bon appetit.

If horror is your thing, you should definitely check it out for a few episodes and decide for yourself.

If it weren't too clumsy, the most accurate title for this new show would probably be The Opposite of Glee.

Viewers who like the horror genre and the offbeat Murphy/Falchuk approach, and who are willing to put in enough serious time to absorb all the nuances, will fall in love.

That's certainly my lingering criticism of American Horror Story: I'm supposed to come back for more? And more? (Without a prescription for anti-anxiety pills?)

Even if the show crashes and burns, it should leave behind a fabulous corpse.

American Horror Story is beginning its run with problems, but enough goes right to give this twisted terror tale the ghost of a chance (several ghosts, in fact).

Prime time is so full of mainstream pabulum these days that when a work as audacious and ambitious as American Horror Story comes along, some of us feel compelled to embrace it. Most TV shows quickly fade from memory. This one will haunt your dreams.
