A charitable read: Ascension was challenging a genre to dream better.

It is excellent science fiction, and I urge such minded individuals to watch it. And be patient with it.

In perhaps the most surprising turn of the evening, the show completely betrays the audience's expectations for a space drama and gives us instead The Truman Show in space.

The show looks bright and slick, expertly setting the scene and the culture of Ascension in a believable and detailed way.

Part of what makes Ascension excellent is its genuine commitment to surprise and pace.

All things considered, Ascension is a rather fun way to spend a few of my evenings.

The world of Ascension is rich, and a late twist folds in several storylines into one incredibly interesting premise.

"Ascension..." has an intriguing premise, lots of plot twists and high production values. If you're sick of sitcoms' holiday episodes, this alternative is worth a look.

Ascension was science fiction without science, character-driven narrative without characters and a story so lacking in interest that this could be the cure for insomnia.
April 8, 2020
The way it's going, though, Ascension seems more interested in its characters' affairs than the strange, terrifying, miraculous world it's created.

But some of the acting is questionable at best.

The story of the crusading space ship and the need to form a new world is compressed in this first episode and becomes a standard murder mystery which just happens to be taking place on a space ship.

Feast on it you will, especially if you're into the fun of the sexy soap-opera material. The sizzle is red-hot at times.

Ascension is just bonkers enough to follow further down its rabbit hole, if only because there's every possibility said rabbit hole will be revealed to be at least five other, completely different things before all is said and done.

SyFy's ambitious new mini-series event, entitled Ascension, will either leave you with a sense of bewilderment and frustration by the end of its two-hour premiere, or have you salivating at the mouth for a taste of what's to come.
December 15, 2014
It's sad to watch Ascension lean so soon and so heavily on the easiest form of parallel storytelling, like a Love Boat episode without the laugh track (or the love).
December 15, 2014
An intriguing sci-fi premise becomes seriously less so. The first episode is worth watching for the buildup and the surprise, but many viewers will abandon spaceship at the end.
December 15, 2014
The more we discover about the nature of the mission the juicier and more surprising Ascension gets, with its unsettling detours into social Darwinism. The less revealed about the story the better.
December 15, 2014
I like what I've seen, though there are more than a couple of moments where the only possible reaction is "Naaah." Still, whatever has been made or becomes of it... it has something a little different to show you.
December 15, 2014
The problems presented in the show's first hour are fairly superficial, and -- barring a drastic midseries turn -- that's unlikely to change.
