A charitable read: Ascension was challenging a genre to dream better.

It is excellent science fiction, and I urge such minded individuals to watch it. And be patient with it.

In perhaps the most surprising turn of the evening, the show completely betrays the audience's expectations for a space drama and gives us instead The Truman Show in space.

The show looks bright and slick, expertly setting the scene and the culture of Ascension in a believable and detailed way.

Part of what makes Ascension excellent is its genuine commitment to surprise and pace.

All things considered, Ascension is a rather fun way to spend a few of my evenings.

The world of Ascension is rich, and a late twist folds in several storylines into one incredibly interesting premise.

"Ascension..." has an intriguing premise, lots of plot twists and high production values. If you're sick of sitcoms' holiday episodes, this alternative is worth a look.

Feast on it you will, especially if you're into the fun of the sexy soap-opera material. The sizzle is red-hot at times.

Ascension is just bonkers enough to follow further down its rabbit hole, if only because there's every possibility said rabbit hole will be revealed to be at least five other, completely different things before all is said and done.

SyFy's ambitious new mini-series event, entitled Ascension, will either leave you with a sense of bewilderment and frustration by the end of its two-hour premiere, or have you salivating at the mouth for a taste of what's to come.

The more we discover about the nature of the mission the juicier and more surprising Ascension gets, with its unsettling detours into social Darwinism. The less revealed about the story the better.

I like what I've seen, though there are more than a couple of moments where the only possible reaction is "Naaah." Still, whatever has been made or becomes of it... it has something a little different to show you.

Clearly, there are lots of things to like about Ascension. The characters are well-enough developed in the early going that I could actually have done without the murder mystery - or, for that matter, the space strangeness.

Syfy taps into a couple of resonant themes with Ascension, and tells the story well if not very subtly.

Ascension is hokey and hyper-staged. But there's a twist at the end of the first night that should have you coming back.
December 15, 2014
If you're a fan of science fiction, mystery, drama or all the above, Syfy's latest miniseries will be right up your alley.

Right out of the gate, it's not as well-written or acted as something like Thrones or Walking Dead, but it does have a little whiff of the early, finding-itself days of Battlestar Galactica to it. And that's something to build on.
December 14, 2014
Ascension is an ambitious leap for Syfy, but the series' refreshingly retro feel and unexpected weirdness suggest that it could be one worth taking.

Believe it or not, Ascension is smarter than it looks-the kind of B-TV escapism that often gets undervalued because it's somehow deemed lesser than programming that wears its intellectual aspirations on its sleeve.
