Police commissioner Gereon Rath is transferred from Cologne to Berlin, the epicenter of political and social change in the Golden Twenties. Shellshocked from his service during World War I, he uncovers a dangerous web of intrigue while investigating one of Berlin's biggest pornography rings. There's an even bigger conspiracy unfolding, though, when Soviet rebels hijack a train as part of a mission hatched by Trotsky supporters in the city.

Fries, who looks even better in a cloche hat than Rath does in a fedora, is the best thing in the series... No matter how over the top “BB” can get,” and that’s very over the top, everything’s right where it should be so long as she’s on screen. Go to Full Review

There is even more going on than in previous seasons, and while the show is as watchable as ever, the action does not stay as sharply in focus as before... the individual storylines do not carry the same dramatic and emotional weight. Go to Full Review

“Babylon Berlin” might be thought of as the Teutonic “Sopranos,” albeit with greater historical sweep, broader characterizations, more ambitious production values and music. And dancing. And, not incidentally, joy. Go to Full Review

Though Babylon Berlin segued to MHz Choice, a streamer specializing in European dramas, after Netflix dropped it, the fourth season is just as action-packed as the first three. Go to Full Review

ev p @evman Jul 30 This series is right up there with the best. Intriguing plot lines, wonderful characters, suspense, all strung out over an historical landscape that gives it an epic quality. Can't wait for season 5. See more John C 01/12/2025 This was a big disappointment after the first 3 seasons. I only stayed with it because I enjoy what Liv Fries brings to her character. Otherwise, bleh! See more Michaela Carberry E 01/09/2025 There is no coherent story line. A hodge podge of very mixed and unrelated events. Do not recommend. Totally different from first three episodes. Terrible. See more Paul C @paulocarlin 12/17/2024 Having been thrilled by the story, plotting, pacing and character relationships in seasons 1-3, I was excited to see what season 4 had in store. Unfortunately, while the inevitability of history lent the story a continuing drive, it ultimately felt like a letdown. Gereon and Lotte's relationship was, and should have continued to be, primary; their chaotic passion drove the prior part. And yet a super-abundance of plot and sub-plot, with secondary issues galore, made for a bit of a mess, and kind of left them adrift. When 3 scenes IN A ROW have someone overhearing or just happening to come upon someone else doing something secret -- or a bottle of chloroform discovered lying on the floor... that's just lazy. It's still worth watching, IMO, but I hope season 5, if it gets there, does some serious house cleaning. See more Michael S @Arquebus 12/16/2024 Seasons 1 and 2 were excellent. Season 3 fell off a little. I can't get anywhere with Season 4. There are so many subplots: boxing, rockets, the diamond, the SA, Toni, the dance marathon. They aren't that compelling and they don't fit together well. The strength of the series was Gereon Rath and Charlotte Ritter, and their relationship with each other. In Season 4 they are almost minor characters and no one else has stepped in to be a unifying focus for the series. Great recreation of the past, though. See more Jose L 08/02/2024 The acting keeps getting worse, and the stories keep getting more ridiculous. Season one was very good, season two good, season three the worse one, and season four a little better than season three. See more Read all reviews
