Back in the Game: Season 1 (2013)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: James Caan is appealing as an arrogant ex-jock, but Back in the Game is full of stale jokes and crude humor that isn't very family friendly.

Tv Season Info

In this comedy, Terry Gannon (Maggie Lawson), a divorced single mother and former softball all-star, decides to coach a baseball team of misfits that includes her son, Danny (Griffin Gluck), after they're rejected by the local Little League hierarchy. Whether she likes it or not, Terry gets help from her grizzled, beer-guzzling father, Terry "The Cannon" Gannon Sr (James Caan), a once-promising baseball player with whom she's forced to live after being estranged for years, but his approach is a little unorthodox, especially when he tries to cure the team's fear of getting hit by a pitch by taking them to a prison for some unconventional instruction from the warden. Off the field, Danny tries to woo an out-of-his-league classmate, Vanessa (Kennedy Waite), and Terry befriends Lulu (Lenora Crichlow), the brash and boozy widowed mother of one of the players who's usually more loaded than the bases. Also starring Ben Koldyke, Cooper Roth, JJ Totah and Brandon Salgado.

Critic Reviews for Back in the Game Season 1

The cast throws this curveball that catches the plate for a strike.

It could retreat into family fuzziness or it could dive deeper into the suburban weirdness suggested by its supporting characters.... I've got my foam finger out rooting for the latter.

Sep 23, 2013 | Full Review…

The cast and characters have enough energy to suggest the show could settle into a groove in future episodes now that the exposition and premise-building is finished.

However many points you dock it for lack of originality, you've got to give back double for ferociously funny execution.

Sep 25, 2013 | Full Review…

Caan's perfectly clipped delivery and his daughter's well-timed comebacks make Back in the Game at least a standup double if not a sliding triple.

With Lawson as with Caan, it underutilizes a good actor.

Unless they pick up the pace of the writing and stretch themselves, Back in the Game could easily find itself on the early chopping block.

Could we have some fresh jokes, please?

Sep 6, 2013 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

A show that includes crude lines about dad passing gas and pulling out his junk and has 10-year-olds saying things adults hope is too advanced for their age ends up being sweet but still strikes out as a comedy.

While Game's casting and writing is solid, the premise might not be unique enough to score a sizeable audience.
