This is a fascinating documentary about a restaurateur who ran a vegan restaurant popular with celebrities in New York City but was also involved in a truly bizarre relationship with a maniac that dragged her down. Lots of eye-witness testimony and the film provides a glimpse into some weird human nature.

Rather dull documentary that suffers by only looking at this tale from one side. Could of, and should of been a couple of episodes long.
      • May 11, 2023
Long, drawn out, boring. And very very odd and not in a quirky interesting way. I think the same historic clip of Sarma walking down a street and around the restaurant has been used over and over and over again as they had so little to work with. Sarma comes across as quite an aloof individual. So it is hard to root for her or feel sympathy. The whole thing just feels like we are sitting in on a terribly boring therapy session.

This documentary is 4 hours, but should be a one hour movie. Even then, it would be boring. I fail to understand how Sarma was taken in by this fraudster. His line of BS was obvious to everyone except her.

I don't even know what to say about this. I Everything I type doesn't cover it. Pretty girls are crazy, nice guys finish last. That's my experience. This is worse than The Tinder Swindler. The production value is fine but I can't give a higher rating because she might be in on it, and the doc seems to to want empathy. 3 months? She deserved way more than that because she wasn't brainwashed. The recording of conversations clearly states it.

Very hard to like this doc. Sarma it's just not that bright. My five-year-old would've realized he was getting robbed by this psychotic evil liar. The doc It's trying to make it seem that Sarma was fooled by this evil guy and she was but she's a friggin idiot. And she's just as much of a thief liar as he is. I don't recommend watching mess so frustrating and what is the use

Once you watch the show, you think the title is off. She's not bad but she has been scammed. In episode 2 and so on, he dialogue keeps on repeating, redundant. I skimmed through it because its repetitive and slow. I think they could have finished this in just 2 or 3 episodes.

Bad Vegan is a Bad Story. The title reflects that we're in murky soup here, vegan or otherwise. From a storytelling perspective, there's the problem that most of this documentary is the interviewing of former restaurateur Sarma Melngailis. She lacks affect, perspective, grace and most of all, remorse for aiding and abetting the $1.5 million swindling of her restaurant investors, employees and her mother. Anthony is the oh-so-obvious swindler and nutter who wins over Sarma. There are so many WTF moments given Anthony's ineptitude and lunacy as a swindler that Sarma's deadpan recounting of the nonsense ALMOST makes for a compelling reason to keep watching. Beware the 50% plus ratings differential between the critics approval and the disgust of us peon viewers (AKA the paying public). Spoiler alert: Sarma's adorable pit bull Leon "the immortal" survives a really disgusting road trip. Phew!

i lost brain cells i can never retrieve having watched this. my intelligence is beyond offended. sarma should win the academy award for best actress in a documentary. among the more shocking lines, in the 4th episode, when the vanity fair writer says about their move to TN: "it is sort of a classic American story." i choked on my popcorn. Recommendation: get really high and watch with friends.

The Tinder Swindler is passé, The Vegan Swindler is in! This time the fraud is in millions of dollars with a mind-bending promise - to make the victim's beloved dog 'immortal.' The victim is 'Vegan Queen' Sarma Melngailis, who set New York haute cuisine aflutter by launching a raw vegan restaurant, Pure Food and Wine. Celebs like Tom Hardy, Owen Wilson and Anne Hathaway hobnobbed there. But the cleverest of minds can succumb to manipulation. Forced to be a fugitive. Forced to order Domino's Pizza. 'Why didn't I run? Why didn't I leave? Why didn't I call the police?' - Sarma questions herself in this documentary. There are no easy answers. But accusations aplenty especially by her unpaid staff, her business associates and self-appointed social media experts. Meanwhile, the fraudster, the strangely named Anthony Strangis.......you have probably guessed what happens to him in the end!
