Critics Consensus

While Bad Vegan occasionally indulges in some of the more salacious habits of the true crime genre, its comprehensive scope and unique tale of fraud make for a fine addition to any viewer's documentary diet.

The extraordinary story of Sarma Melngailis, aka 'the vegan Bernie Madoff', is told in this typically lurid documentary series. Go to Full Review

Almost numbing in its insanity, mostly making the point that once someone like Sarma Melngailis starts down a certain road, any hope of turning back is impossible. Even when you’re promised an immortal dog. Go to Full Review

By not just telling us about the scam, but letting us feel a little of it ourselves, Bad Vegan gives us something less smug -- and a little more of a story worth telling. Go to Full Review

“Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitive” has the right amount of oddity, mystery, and mysticism, making it an engaging watch. Go to Full Review

Two million dollars of fraud, a shady online boyfriend and an immortal dog — the tragicomic story of New York restauranteur Sarma Melngailis is fascinating stuff. Go to Full Review

Taking these omissions into account, Bad Vegan remains a compelling story. Smith takes his time escalating the intensity of Melngailis’ downward spiral, but the tale never feels slow, and each episode is perfectly plotted... Go to Full Review

Kenneth P @RT08992890 11/19/2023 A really enjoyable and frustrating story that had me scratching my head halfway through. At first I felt bad for the woman restaurant owner, only to view her as a gullible fool later on. It's hard to believe that a person as smart as she seemed to be could be conned by this clown of a human. It became almost unwatchable because of how obvious the con was and how she complained but kept going along with it. I had to see it through to the end out of curiosity and hoping that this woman would finally come to her senses. See more David F @dfulmer 07/01/2023 This is a fascinating documentary about a restaurateur who ran a vegan restaurant popular with celebrities in New York City but was also involved in a truly bizarre relationship with a maniac that dragged her down. Lots of eye-witness testimony and the film provides a glimpse into some weird human nature. See more Gareth v @geewah 06/23/2023 Rather dull documentary that suffers by only looking at this tale from one side. Could of, and should of been a couple of episodes long. See more Kieran H @Misty79 05/11/2023 Long, drawn out, boring. And very very odd and not in a quirky interesting way. I think the same historic clip of Sarma walking down a street and around the restaurant has been used over and over and over again as they had so little to work with. Sarma comes across as quite an aloof individual. So it is hard to root for her or feel sympathy. The whole thing just feels like we are sitting in on a terribly boring therapy session. See more Mike L @MikeLance 05/21/2022 I don't even know what to say about this. I Everything I type doesn't cover it. Pretty girls are crazy, nice guys finish last. That's my experience. This is worse than The Tinder Swindler. The production value is fine but I can't give a higher rating because she might be in on it, and the doc seems to to want empathy. 3 months? She deserved way more than that because she wasn't brainwashed. The recording of conversations clearly states it. See more 04/21/2022 Once you watch the show, you think the title is off. She's not bad but she has been scammed. In episode 2 and so on, he dialogue keeps on repeating, redundant. I skimmed through it because its repetitive and slow. I think they could have finished this in just 2 or 3 episodes. See more Read all reviews
