You root for him more fiercely than you've ever rooted for a difficult TV antihero, because what he wants is so representative of all anybody wants, in the end.

If [Bill Hader] was born to be an Old Hollywood star, Barry is where he finally gets the opportunity to show it.

The show never strays from its down-to-earth storytelling. If it's funny because it's true (or feels true, in this case), then that same principle works for the darker, laugh-less moments.

Baffling, dull Barry is a bore, and so is the series named for him.

Starts strongly and only gets better as its plot becomes more brilliantly complex and its characters are more fully developed.

"Barry," Bill Hader's excellent new HBO series, is a comedy, make no mistake. It's wry, mostly, but it can also be kooky and flip, as it chronicles a man's efforts to transition from violent hit man to LA actor.

As the stakes get higher, Hader's performance acquires additional gravity and emotional weight. And it's worth noting that the show's depiction of depression is both evocative and respectful.

It's hard to tell if... Bill Hader and Alex Berg intended Barry to be so ridiculously different at its ending compared to its beginning - or whether they just wanted something ridiculous. In either case, the end result is fascinating, weird and gripping.
